Dialogue a concern in the early goings

..Admittedly a small sample size, and without context, it's hard to be critical early. And I don't know if I'm simply conditioned to the efficiency of dialogue used in Alien and Blade Runner and the effectiveness with which it was delivered due to great acting. That said, the trailers, tv spots, featurettes have me concerned in the early goings. My immediate impression is that 95% of the dialogue revealed to this point comes off as, well, pretty cheesy. Maybe it's in line with Starship Troopers 5 as it would be delivered by [Hollywood pretty boy/girl of the month], but so far not indicative with the type of dialogue I expected with a Ridley Scott science fiction epic. And maybe that's not a fair comparison, especially at this stage. The cast is stacked with great actors, so hopefully it is a matter of missing the corresponding context. And if it isn't, hopefully the clearly amazing visuals and [God willing] plot itself make you forget about lines like [paraphrase] "Are you ready to do this?! You're SO ready to do this!" Thoughts?

I think I might have to agree with you on this one, but I will say it is very hard to judge dialogue out of context without watching the full scene. Concerns? "Miss Vickers is there a hidden agenda you're not telling us about" (Holloway)

Well to be honest i dont agree with that ...of course dialogue in trailers arent a great example but i see great acting ...some lines are already a classic .There was not Game of thrones dialogue in Alien ...but was so real and well acted ...i think it will be the same .

I'll tell you what I think of the dialogues after seeing the movie for real. The acting seems pretty good and I trust Sir Ridleys' vision. My only hope is that the guy from LOST doesn't blow it by making it all Purgatory-wise. the horror... the horror...

The only "cheese" i hear is Vickers/Theron sounds a little silly having a southern drawl, along with Idris Elba's rather forced attempts at the same. Otherwise, Noomi and Fassbender will be the main characters and they are the best at "line delivery" from all their films and the lines in this one as well...

I see what you're getting at. But we have to remember one thing...Prometheus, unlike ALIEN, has completely different characters. This crew isn't a bunch of space truckers that are just tired and want to get home. Half or more of this crew are actually excited to get to their destination and explore the potential findings. Its a completely different mind set that can lead to some cheesy lines. (Think back when you last got together with a group of friends or even co-workers and went out to do something exciting that you were looking forward to for a while. Probably cracked some jokes and said some "cheesy" stuff on the way...) But overall I hope the dialogue, although different, is as good as in ALIEN.

I know exactly where the OP is coming from, especially when "Prometheus has landed" sounds so much like "The Eagle has landed." But I think Mentos is correct. It's easy to say that the line above sounds cheesy-grandiose, when you haven't experienced what lead up to it, while being immersed in the surround-sound and bigger-than-life imagery of a theatrical presentation. What sounds cheesy on paper, may seem perfectly appropriate in the right context. Besides, even in the fictional future universe where this story takes place, it isn't every day that a ship lands on a world that's clearly been occcupied by an intelligent species........it would be a pretty dramatic moment, for anyone on board.

Just my opinion and you'll need to have an open mind for it!
Admittedly a small sample size, and without context, it's hard to be critical early. Thoughts?
Here it is... I hated your post ! The reason I hated it was it pre assumes failure which IMHO is a complete impossibility at this point. It shows a complete lack of faith in Ridley Scott and the rest of the writing team...and does so let's face facts here, without any one of us actually hearing one proper line of dialogue we know is actually appearing in this film for a fact. IN fact, I would go on to say this thing is poised to rack up any number of Oscars in just under a year from now and I am basing this on what we HAVE IN FACT seen and heard. The dialogue in Gladiator, Incredible.Black Rain,Superlative. Legend, Magical, ALIEN...Unprecedented...including a bout of Parker flatulation and a one cheek sneak that sneaked it's way past MILLIONS of people who have seen that film right up until yesterday 33+ years later including most of the people frequenting this board. who never even noticed it. The man has made a career out of reading between the lines of dialogue and presenting stellar ideas based on these interpretations...The entire Wired Interview with him can be found here and as you read it it becomes very clear just how important dialogue in film is to him and he pays special attention to all of it. ScottWired If Even one bit of "Cheesiness" wandered into this thing it already got spliced and ended up a sticky reminder of how tight this entire film is going to be on the bottom of someone's shoe.

I sure hope the movie will deliver thrills and chills but realistically you can't put it into the same context and grittyness as Alien. Ridley was just starting out in movies when He did that film and the character and grittyness of that era leaves it with an indelible mark in our minds forever. I feel that Prometheus will be beautiful to look at but Ridley I feel has probably succumbed to the current look of Hollywood which leaves out the raw quality that Alien enjoys. Chalk this up to him maturing but don't forget he hasnt made a scifi film in over 30 years. I have high hopes but they are tempered with a reality check that recent leaks (which will be confirmed or debunked on June 8) might point to a film that will disappoint many that expect a other Alien.

I don't think you can put ALIEN in the same league as Prometheus when it comes to grit...sorry !!! I don't even think it's a close contest at ALL.

I bet a lot of what is giving you this impression is David8. But I think he's deliberately sounding like Data - remember he's supposed to be a not-yet-very-sophisticated android. Some GOOD dialogue so far: The Weylan viral - very chilling - the now classic line: 'we were so wrong' 'Not a map, an invitation' 'From who?' (F knows! Let's just find out. Where's your F ing sense of adventure mu fu ?)

I think Holloway's lines and character have a lot of people worried, but we have to remember, he's gonna be one that we will almost think deserves his fate. He's almost an antihero. He's overenthusiastic to the point of being annoying, and his dialog (or what we've heard so far) indicates this. He's young, and a total noob at space travel (obviously) and so the clips we see of him out of his seat at the landing would be realistic, although stupid... And his false bravado, trying to encourage a compatriot during the pyramid entry (the "are you ready,e tc" part), would be of a false "hero" who's just trying to keep himself from sheeting his own pants...

sure...a lot of people with zero faith in Ridley Scott and the project itself, and nothing better to do then to speculate wildly on some fictitious potential failure in what now...?..the Dialogue of all things?. and lets face some more cold hard facts here...If farting in the Mess while simultaneously saying "can I finish my coffee it's the only good thing on this ship"? is what someone would call Stellar Dialogue and you are basing your arguments on the dialogue in "Alien", as the example for proper dialogue, man no offense, but are you ever lost, whomever "You" might be. and then there was this little gem...
but so far not indicative with the type of dialogue I expected with a Ridley Scott science fiction epic.
Can I see the dialogue YOU have written for this film? It must be better right? Look, all I am saying is this entire argument is UNFAIR and based on what exactly? Not One Word Of the dialogue in this film has been officially released to the public yet...not one word!!! All we have seen are Trailers! And, I for one have not heard One Blessed out of place or cheesy word in any of them yet to boot !!! Not One ! In Fact, what I have heard...Is freaking terrifying compared to any of the 400,000 or more words spoken in Alien.

Can I see the dialogue YOU have written for this film? It must be better right?
Hi there. I thought this was a discussion board. But hey, you're right, the dialogue sounds really, really good so far. What are people thinking otherwise with their contrary opinions and wildly personal character assasinations against Ridley Scott and everything he stands for? Chumps.

you don't have to agree with me or be sarcastic about it you can be straight with me like I am being with you...i was just being as hard and honest for me as I can, but in no way does that mean I do not respect your right to and in fact your very opinion, I just feel it is based on faulty information and a complete lack of belief and faith in Scott's abilities as an accomplished and a quite intelligent enough to dump bad dialogue...director IMO. I also think this should be the very very least of anyone's worries at all !!!

I'm a bit concerned about this myself from what we've seen so far. But I find it hard to believe a RS film would disappoint in this respect. Experience conveys that the greater the expectation the worse the dialogue seems to come across!! That's a loose equation that seems to work for me! In some films I've been massively anticipating it would have been better if everyone had of just shut the f**k up!!

You mean like this classic, sophisticated dialogue? :-) Naked Gun 2 1/2
