MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 9:19 AMthere's alot of "that little girl playing the violin is shaw" getting tossed around. we know that there's some flashback of shaw as a young girl by the list of cast we've gotten ahold of, and i admit it makes it easy to finger that hologram shot as being related.
in my opinion...
a) people dont stand in the middle of picturesque fields playing instruments. i've never seen anyone do that.
b) if its a "memory" of shaws, it wouldn't be in the 3rd person.
c) i mentioned before that they wouldn't stream images of shaws memories or dreams in the middle of the ship for everyone to see. someone asked, "what makes you think that they're in common space, and not in private", to which i say, because you can see at least 5 crew members in the scene in the "origins" featurette, noteably shaw, holloway, david and milburn.
IMPORTANT
facts...
If you watch the hologram in the entirety of that scene, you'll see ALOT of random images that dont have anything to do with shaw.
Most notably, we see Da vinci's Vitruvian Man, Da vinci's Mona Lisa, and a girl playing violin...an instrument which Davinci was credited for inventing.

none of this absolutely rules out the possibility that the image is shaw, but i cant see any reason to believe that it is, other than that we know there is a flashback scene in this movie, and shaw is a female.

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 9:22 AM...in addition, it dawns on me what that strange spiral going up the temple reminds me of...Da vinci's flying machine. thats clearly a reach, but in researching for this post i noticed it, thought it was interesting.

They do, actually. I've known people that play their instruments with a lot more feeling when surrounded by nature ;-)

MemberDeaconMay-14-2012 9:34 AMThat image of one of Da Vinci's inventions does look like the thing inside the stucture of the cave.
As far as this being a dream or play back of dreams i am not sure?

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 9:45 AM@cypher...you're right, people like to do things "outside", but c'mon man. wanna play your guitar in the quad so girls can see, ok...wanna paint outside probably because you want to look at what you're painting ( i do this so im not being sarcastic, and if i was better at the guitar, i might have flashed it in the quad ;)), fine...
but that picture is far too "perfect" and picturesque for me.
you're right though, and considering it is a movie, picturesque and perfect arent quite so impossible.

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 9:56 AMDumb question: where is violin?
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:00 AM@Sky...in the still above with shaw glaring over a yellow hologram, there is an image of a young girl holding a violin in a field under a tree. also seen is an image of a sonogram. we've considered that these are memories of shaws because we know that there is a flashback scene in this movie with shaw.
if you watch the "origins" featurette under LATEST NEWS at the top of the webpage youll see more of this scene in motion.

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:07 AMHow could they be memories? i doubt Shaw remembers her mother getting a sonogram while she was pregnant with her...as we can assume Shaw has no children. I agree with the Cypher too on the point that no one dances around a field fo wheat playing a violin...that is just stupid, IMO.
gameover man
MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:13 AM@syphonox...
thats actually what IM saying.
the sonogram is thought to be related to shaw perhaps being pregnant, or foreshadowing her "pregnancy" later in the story.
Syphonox
MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:17 AMI could buy that being foreshadowing, just a bunch of historic/informational images being thrown out there...a sonogram being one of them...and we know something goes down with Shaw.

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:19 AMMan, that is very small detailed observation. I missed that completely. I guess she could be her sister or daughter on earth. Some recorded clip of her.

Co-AdminMemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:20 AMWell, you haven't visited a town called Nimban here in Aus then :-P I was just saying that people do do it occasionally, a peaceful setting is actually quite conductive for a musician a lot of the time, admittedly maybe not THAT picturesque, however I have been with a girl that used to play her violin in the field near our house sometimes when she was trying to write a new piece......... So not completely out of the question ;-)

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:20 AMNah these are not memories, David and Shaw are compiling a portfolio of information to present to any potential Alien species they might encounter.
They try and figure out a way through visual and mathematical information to communicate with a species that obviously will have a completely alien way of interacting.
Sorta like the Voyager Golden Record

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:25 AM@Cypher...fair enough. i'll stick to it being "suspicious" instead of "it doesnt happen", and lean more on the "memories arent in the 3rd person" crutch.
i do think theres something to the relationship between the Da Vinci theme of several of those images (violin, vitruvian man, mona lisa), although the scenes we see could be spaced out more than they appear in the clip.
and the sonogram seems to be behind the rest, on the next file, almost elusive from the others.

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 10:50 AM@Ender....there you are my friend!!
i referenced your suggestion earlier in the thread without siting you specifically, but i didnt take credit either ;) i think thats a much more probable scenario.
another is that its files for David to run through and download, like school for him.
remember the Fifth Element, when she is absorbing all of that information from the history of the earth? David may upgrade in that fashion, if he's not "born" with the knowledge already.

Yeah when Leeloo gets all upset when she sees the history section on war! Another classic sci-fi movie
I like the comparison with the Di Vinci flying machine - couldnt remember what the temple shape reminded me of!

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2012 12:05 PMThe spiral motif in the temple's VERY interesting to me... but then I'm in construction and that sort of design is closely associated with the promotion of passive ventilation and air circulation. It'd be interesting to think that the Engineers or whoever it was that built the structure were more embracing of such technologies rather than active measures. Hence the fact that their technology is largely organic in appearance and perhaps execution. That's me going out on a limb though...
