i don't own any deluxe editions of ALIEN(1979) on Blu-ray i was wondering what is the B E S T option to get, i'm seeking the ALIEN Blu-ray that has the most definitive and extensive extras deleted scenes / and all that other good stuff i know there is the "Quadrilogy" and the "Anthology", but not sure which one is best for ALIEN overall i'd guess the latest one "Anthology" is best, but not sure keep in mind, i am a hardcore ALIEN(1979) snob, so i am solely focused on all things ALIEN, and not really giving a shit about the rest of the films that followed if that means having to buy a boxset just to get what i need, then that is what i will have to do. just want to make sure that if i fork over my all too precious cash, it will be well worth the exchange for what i am seeking some valid advice would be much appreciated thanx

I LOVE my Alien Vault book. That is the definitive collection of facts, awesomeness, and stuff that you cant find on the Internet. The Vault also comes with a crapload of goodies such as: stickers, posters, blue prints, storyboards. Hr giger stuff.

"beer mats" haha! sounds good, i have only heard good things about the Anthology set

You have my sympathy

MemberOvomorphMay-12-2012 3:59 PM
Anthology has got the lot, absolute winner. It also comes with two free beer mats, thoughfully labeled Alien 3 and Resurrection. Seriously, you can't buy better.

upgraded to the anthology about 5 months ago definitely the one to go for got it for £17 on Amazon, would still be cheap at twice the price. Essential purchase for any fan. Also picked up Alien Vault for less than £20 at the same time, another must have.

ah cool... does the ALIEN Vault have anything more video wise, than the Anthology does? edit: wooops, for some reason, i thought the Vault contained a Bluray disc (my bad)

Had the quadrilogy and upgraded to the blu ray anthology too. I'm serious about my extras and buy pretty much every release of a film if I love it and it has new extras on it. Seriously, I pour over the extras. Watch them numerous times. The antholigy has everything the quadriolgy has and MORE. Much more. Plus, I read somewhere that RS actually tinkered with and changed the 2003 DC some more for the anthology blu ray. You must get the anthology though. If you just buy the single blu rays you get none of the content except for the commentary tracks. One more thing the blu ray anthology has is the "MU-TH-UR MODE" which allows you to watch the film and choose differnt special feature options while you watch. There's commentary, score, video and fact track icons off to the sides of the screen. You click on which you want to listen to while you're watching the film. One thing that suck is that all the video footage is on the 2 special feature discs. So if you click the video option it doesn't show it right then. It will tell you who's in the video and what aspect of the scene they're talking about. If you click again it makes a note and when you put the SF discs in you can watch the footage you picked. It's hard to explain and a little hard to get used to but I dig it. Hard to explain too. Point is the BR Anthology is the only way to go. Unless you want stuff like statues or coasters or a 1:1 Alien head that stores the discs under the glass dome. But those are like $500. Doesnt have all the Special features either. Trust me, I've done my homework.

Yes, I have the Vault as well and it does rock. I don't mean to sound full of myself but I know my Alien stuff. I honestly didn't think the Vault would offer anything new but had to have it. It actually did have some little things here and there that I didn't know which were interesting. If you arent completely insane about Alien like me and don't know much about the first film or you do and just need an easy refresher course the Vault is a great way to go.

The Anthology is available on Ebay in a cool collector's ALIEN light up figurine and egg. Only 500 were made, so it's a BIT pricey, but if you can find it and you like that sort of thing, it's pretty neat looking. If not, just get the regular "Anthology"...it's the same exact content without the statuette...

Oh yeah, one of the coolest things the Anthology has that the Quad doesnt is the Alien Saga doc that's narrated by John Hurt. I thought I was going to have to order that off the net and was freaking psyched when I saw it was added to the extras. Sorry for the 3 posts in a row.

They were letterboxed, apart from Aliens...therefore looking the best, even if it was the gayest. If I had a letterboxed HD TV, then I would'nt, but like a twat I haven't.

I'll admit, my best set right now is the 420p-DVD Alien, Aliens, Alien3 triple pack forcing me to view the extras elsewhere. I think I will be getting the "Anthology" or at least having the discs sent to me by NetFlix in the meantime. My 9.5 year old is totally hooked and is the most excited of all his older siblings. He is very into "special effects" so he knows this is all make-believe so I don't have the concern that most parents might have.

thank you for all this great feedback looks like the ALIEN Anthology is THEE one...! i do own the Alien Deluxe Laser Disc Set (laserdiscs - - remember those?!?) bought that waaaaay back in 1992. there is a hidden feature i discovered by accident when i dropped my remote control for the laserdisc player i was watching the last disc of 5, the disc that contained all the cool pre-production art for ALIEN, i dropped my remote control, (with my "catlike reflexes") i was able to catch it before it hit the carpet, and my finger hit the chapter FF button by mistake it skipped thru the entire chapter on FF, and as the multitude of images fast-forwarded - - the sound of the Nostromo's computer booting up played in PERFECT synch with the images as they flashed by my mouth dropped open, and played it again and again to make sure it wasn't a glitch. i called a friend over so he could see it for himself, and we both laughed at how cool that such a feature was hidden on that disc ah...memories....

Yes. ALIEN Anthology is THEE one... The bonus material on it is better than some of the films themselves. I recently got it for $42 via Amazon in the US. The original Alien films on it look better than they did in the theaters.

@Spartacus: yeah....they were the "Blurays" of their time. ha! @sukkai: thanx for answering my next question, in my initial post, i forgot to ask about the quality of the picture glad you mentioned the great looking picture quality

By "original Alien Films" I mean 1979 and the Director’s Cut of that. The rest are fine, but Aliens per se is nothing to write home about in terms of improvement of picture quality. There are hours and hours and hours of of bonus material and the documentaries that were done for Alien and Aliens and Alien 3 are particularly good. They let it all hang out, and with the exception of Fincher, I think they have footage on there from all the directors. Fincher probably spits when he hears the word "alien." Ridley is particularly participatory. In the bonus material for Resurrection, a lot of the production folks are hinting at the (seminal) ideas of Prometheus already. It's pretty current and worth owning (and I almost NEVER buy physical media, but in this case I'm glad I did).

I never owned any Alien movies on laser disc because my first wife hated sci-fi and horror. We saw Alien3 in the theatre but only after she was bribed with getting her nails done. I did own Blade Runner, still have the player and collection hidden somewhere in the abordoli compound. Lol

MemberOvomorphMay-12-2012 7:32 PM
@sukkai: i would like to see the bonus material for ALL the films, even though ALIEN is the only film of the series that i take seriously it would be interesting to see what was left out, as well as the artwork for those films, should any be included. i've seen a few extras from the sequels, but only via Youtube but not in Bluray quality @abordoli: "but only after she was bribed with getting her nails done." lol..! well, whatever it take i suppose. i also have Blade Runner on laserdisc, as well as on iTunes. i wish they'd release a definitive completely remastered cut on Bluray, with all the bells / whistles included, wishing they'd include the theatrical version that has the much hated voice-over, which is the version i saw in the theater, and the its the version i grew to love

BUT, the documentary "Dangerous Days" that is on the most recent DVD collection (2007) is one of the most interesting things I've ever seen in my life. It is MORE than worth the current price on AMAZON by double or triple or MORE! Whatever they release on Blu-Ray will not likely have better content than this, but it may look a bit better in 1080p. It will probably cost a fortune too. I think the documentary is 3 hours long. It's SO worth it.

@sukkal: a cool! Thank You for the link. i'd heard of the Dangerous Days doc. but never bothered to investigate it i will do so right now =)
