does anybody else suspect this could be a third masterpiece of Sci-Fi for legendary director Sir Ridders of Newcy brown land. he does seem to have the best grasp of this genre despite his mistakes in other areas. and what do you reckon the box office take is going to be on this beast

Its odd to me that people view ridleys films as bad i just don't see it. Yes not all are in the classic mould of alien, and blade runner, but apart from the obvious dating of films through the quality of the film used, to the sound production techniques of the 80s through to today's top notch production values, all his films are very watchable and in their genres are pretty good examples. Someone to watch over me, i haven't seen and a good year was not my kind of genre but then even that was watchable nothing is really terrible from ridley if your being honest about the genre its made to fit into.

I understand where you are coming from, I have never really seen a bad Ridley Scott movie, I just meant that he seems to be a master in sci-fi. even his lesser movies seem to be better than most other directors efforts though

I agree and as an artist i think and get the impression he really cares about the product he and his collaborators put into the public domain. I mean it doesn't fit with me that someone who has the reputation he has built up over the years would knowingly put out a bad product even though he struggled in the beginning of his career to gain the recognition he eventually received for both alien, and blade runner, they were not greatly received at the time especially blade runner. I really hope the film is a huge success and he will never be written off as the great director he is and always was and will be.

I thinK Ridley's track record with Science Fiction has a very interesting truth behind it....and besides the masterpieces of 'Alien' and 'Bladerunner', let's not forget the 'Citizen Kane' of TV commercials - his '1984' Apple Computers Super Bowl commercial...... True sci-fi, the kind we label as the truest masterpieces of the genre, always has as part of its approach an attention to realism in the details that other sci-fi films seem to miss....you see, Science Fiction is about that which lies beyond current human knowledge, technology and philosophy that we attempt to imagine despite man's current limitations....that fantastical aspect is made more real, more palatable and, most importantly, more successful as quality storytelling and as a film on the merits, ultimately. Ridley has always been brilliant at capturing realism in a way that feels new and different....his attention to detail is what makes that happen and his attention to truly beautiful imagery combine to establish that realistic pedigree in a way that makes his sciece fiction work transcend that gap between masterpiece and run of the mill sci-fi popcorn flicks.....That said, I think some of his other films fail to capture that result only due to something lacking in the material rather than his skill as a director. As the quality of the material increases, each film catches up to his talent and brilliance as a director......I think we can agree that beside his first three films, all of them masterpieces, there are few other examples in his career where the material is up to that level of quality. His filmmaking skill is always on display..it never fails him. There are projects like 'Thelma & Louise' and 'Gladiator' that are each classics in a way other films of hius could not be due to what he's working with....because I've got to say, whatever the final quality of the film, his movies are always something to look at... So, in answer to the original question, I hope it will be a masterpiece and lean toward that probability, but cannot be sure until I see it.

Sci fi and historical fiction, with BIG, EPIC stories, sweeping events, and BIG time characters are RS's forte. Even he himself has said, he's "from the everything about everything" school. He's not great with comedy, but the nick cage crime drama was good that he did, as are lot's of his other "lighter" faire... BUT, when he tackles the BIG stuff, with a BIG budget, and a BIG stage---he makes pure MAGIC: Bladerunner Alien Kingdom of Heaven Gladiator Black Hawk Down Robin Hood (better movie the second time round) The Duellists I'm probably leaving out something, but all those are Epics. We need MORE, RS...MORE!

Scotts real talent is as a 'world builder'; such a talent will really flourish in sci-fi but he shows it in other genres aswell: Gladiator obviously, but more subtly in flicks like Black Hawk Down and an often overlooked classic American Gangster, this was right back on form for Scott, I think his best film since Blade Runner, 70s NY perfection!

Ridley made over 3,000 commercials BEFORE starting his film-making mega-career. 3,000!!!! Some of them are iconic gold! Boggles the mind!
