Fassbenders accent in that interview on PrometheusNews, is quite heavily foreign and German...however in movies like Inglorious he has done a natural British accent, utterly convincing so why would you choose to have an accent in real life? Isn't the whole purpose of learning a language to reach naturalness?

I've never heard him speak with a German accent, just Irish, strange as what let him down as magneto, was him slipping into his Irish accent, which he has, not a German accent, I assume it's an American who started this strange thread

"so why would you choose to have an accent in real life? Isn't the whole purpose of learning a language to reach naturalness?" This makes ABSOLUTELY no sense.....your judging what his state of natural speaking should be...what the heck is that? Whatever your perceived notion of what his accent sounds like, that's his natural accent and he can obviously alter it for whatever part he's playing....It's as though you're suggesting his accent should be a "natural British accent" because YOU like how natural it sounds........ "the fact is he is CAPABLE of a natural British/American accent as shown in his movies, so why not choose that? why pronounce your accent?" BECAUSE IT BLOODY WELL IS HIS FRAKKING ACCENT AND HIS RIGHT TO SPEAK THE WAY HE BLOODY WELL SPEAKS.....a natural british/american accent is not the correct accent for spoken english as THERE IS NO CORRECT ACCENT.......it's called an accent for a reason; it's the natural result of his regional, cultural, geographic and ethnic unbringing forcing an audible inflection in his voice that he learned naturally in the course of learning to speak english......There's nothing wrong with that because it is what it is....This whole thing is like suggesting that someone shouldn't write in cursive when he or she is capable of printing in the same language...total nonsense....

Which interview is that?! Can you link it? The man is Irish. Whenever I've heard him, his natural accent has sounded Irish...

@Constealltion88 What? Will this assist?: The man was born in Germany but brought up, from a young age, in Ireland. His Mother is Irish. His Father is German. By all accounts, he identifies himself as Irish/German. The historic Nationality of a name, (I thought it common knowledge), does not necessarily determine the nature of the accent of the person to whom that name belongs. Again: I do not dispute the German accent @the coming alleges, I simply ask for evidence of it: for the reason that my experience is that whenever I have heard his natural voice, his accent has been Irish.

@McFilmStar Thank you.

As to your question, the coming... I think he speaks with an Irish/German (feel free to dispute the percentage of each) accent simply because that IS more natural to him. He was raised speaking that way. The accents you hear him use in movies are affectations that require effort and concentration to pull off.

@ the comming - you are making no sense whatsoever

what an odd question? why would someone NOT speak in their natural accent is more to the point, the_comming (and for Fassbender that may involve an Irish and German lilt) I can do a pretty good New Joisey / Sopranos impression - that doesnt mean I should go round speaking like that all the time simply because I can. Youd look like a bit of a c+#@ to be honest

@ the Coming, First of all I'll give you the benefit of the doubt seeing as you're clearly not from Europe, but I will ask you to kindly THINK before you post such an odd query! Michael's accent is from Kerry in the South West of Ireland and a lot of my fellow Irish countrymen and women would find your statement ("he is CAPABLE of a natural British/American accent as shown in his movies, so why not choose that? why pronounce your accent?") insulting and racist!!!!! He is not pronouncing his accent at all!!!!

Kerryman with no sense of humour. Traditional I suppose.

I was born and raised in Britain till the age of 11 when I came to Miami. Florida and 16 when I moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Raised in Folkestone (SE England), I had the Kentish variation of the British accent. From 6 to 11 and 13, I spent all my summers and winter breaks in Como, Italy where I spoke fluent Italian (with a Northern Italian accent). So what is my "natural/unforced" accent now? It is an influence of British, Italian & American (northern and southern) all mixed into one where certain words still retain certain accents. Forced, I can do any accent including thick convenience store-clerk Indian accents, but why bother when my accent is.....what it is.....a culmination of all the languages (and regions) that would affect one's accent. Whenever anyone finds out I am a British "subject" (born in Britain), they instantly ask "Where is your British accent?" It is still there, but by far and large it evolved and adapted to the accent of the people that I was around. I imagine this is the same thing with Michael. He is speaking naturally.

Wow! Hes German? I always thought he was Irish when I heard him an a few interviews lol

the coming

MemberOvomorphApr-19-2012 3:21 PM
@cylon he has a German accent, there is Irish too but you can hear the German very clearly My logic is that, generally when learning a language, the ultimate goal is to loose the accent of the mother language...for example I am learning French, and I speak it with a terrible English accent....My goal is to speak French fluently, and this will involve an effort to sound less English and more French, with the ultimate goal being, sounding like a pure French native so if Fassbender CAN, if he wants, speak a pure native British accent (whether Irish, English whatever), then why would he regress back into his German accent? and I believe this is because, he wants us to know he is German, and Irish this isnt a bizarre question there are many foreigners who would, given the chance speak like a pure native, to not do this is interesting

Fassbender is just a 22nd Century... ;) I am distantly Part Irish (Great Great Grandad and my 2nd name) and Part Sicilian (Great Grandad and Mothers Maiden Name). But i speak Yam Yam ;)

@ The coming - calling Irish people British is just troll behavior and has no place on the this forum - and if you're not trolling and just ignorant you STILL have no place on this forum. Take that crap somewhere else

@The Coming, you are talking bullshit Are you suggesting that people in Wales, whose mother tongue is Welsh, speak in an English accent when then learn to speak English?! Which English accent would they adopt, then? A Londoner's accent? A Newcastle accent? A Mancunian accent? And I suppose if someone is brought up in French Quebec, when they learn English they must speak in a Canadian accent? Why can't you think before posting such utter rubbish. Get a brain

@ender oh Im sorry I thought you were a part of the UK, apparently not...oh wait you are....ur the one being Xeno-phobic lol Scotland, North Ireland, Wales all in the UK, Britain Im afraid that's a funny irish accent Fassbender has...sounds West German

the coming

MemberOvomorphApr-20-2012 5:47 AM
@drop, that is a totally different scenario, those are British accents of different regions, overall they are still British...German is not Ok so when talking on the phone to an Indian call centre, you prefer that they keep their hard to understand Indian accent? and if said person was capable of speaking in a native accent, whatever region, why would they want to regress into a more broken form of english?

he did, I edited it so as not to offend anyone, guys take its easy on each other please, perhaps this is all my fault for being so angry about the thread to begin with but I let it stand because it's everyone's right to say/post their opinion...The Coming I am sure does not want to argue any more than any of the rest of us do and throwing names around at each other isn't going to accomplish anything, let's agree to let it go and move on to a more creative and intellectually stimulating and mature discussion rather than being in a funk any longer with this one, we all have the exact same things at heart here, to discuss this whole thing and everything about it and the coming has as much right to be here as I or anyone else as long as we all conduct ourselves with at least some bare minimal level of formal respect...I am guilty too and need to be more conscious of how I address people here...no one should feel ganged up on at all and in all fairness It is a legitimate question to wonder what the origins are of someones accent. Let's try to remember we are all Human beings...David is The Robot !!!

Sparty I appreciate you trying to move this on but this is blatant trolling, he has in less than 100 words managed to direct offensive remarks at Germany, India, Ireland and Britain. This type of thread is bad for the site and needs to be addressed by a member of staff. A troll is a troll
