THIS IS BRILLIANT...its not directly Prometheus but those of you with half a brain will see where i am coming from...
The story is written in first-person perspective by the geologist William Dyer, a professor at Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins and a dangerous secret beyond a range of mountains higher than the Himalayas. The group that discovered and crossed the mountains found the remains of 14 ancient life forms; completely unknown to science and unidentifiable as either plants or animals. Six of the specimens are badly damaged and the others uncannily pristine. Their highly-evolved features are problematic: their stratum location puts them at a point on the geologic time scale much too early for such features to have naturally evolved yet.
When the main expedition loses contact with this party, Dyer and the rest of his colleagues travel to their camp to investigate. The camp is devastated and both the men and the dogs slaughtered, while Gedney (another member of the sub-expedition) and a dog are missing. Near the camp they find six star-shaped snow mounds, and one specimen buried under each. They discover that the better preserved life forms have vanished, and that some form of dissection experiment has been done on a deliberately unnamed man and a dog. Dyer elects to close off the area from which they took their samples.
Dyer and a graduate student named Danforth fly an airplane over the mountains, which they soon realize are the outer wall of a huge, abandoned stone city of cubes and cones, utterly alien compared with any human architecture. Because of their resemblance to creatures of myth mentioned in the Necronomicon, the builders of this lost civilization are dubbed the "Elder Things". By exploring these fantastic structures, the men are able to learn the history of the Elder Things by interpreting their magnificent hieroglyphic murals: The Elder Things first came to Earth shortly after the Moon was pulled loose from the planet and were the creators of life.

MemberOvomorphApr-19-2012 11:58 PMI am midway through the short story. It is an interesting read.
The parallels extend beyond the wiki summary posted above.
I am at the point where the alien's creation are using molecular engineering to change species to act as slaves. The also destroy whole species if they cause problems....

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 9:02 PMGreat post. Looking forward to reading mountains of madness. You mention part 3, I haven't done any research (google) but are there 3 books ? I'm looking forward to it, thanks

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 9:10 PM@ Diesektor - It's certainly been mentioned before, and I'd be very happy for PROMETHEUS to end up a 'space-set' AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS in it's tone and creep-factor overall. It seems on course for that...
Anyway, until those b*****ds at Universal finally allow Guillermo Del Toro to realise his hard 'R' version of it one day, here's a nice little 'fan' trailer I came across a while back -

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 9:13 PMTo anyone who hasn't read "At the Mountains of Madness" - you don't know what you're missing. It's an awesome story.
If audio dramatizations are your thing, you might want to pick up the version that was done by the HPLHS (H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society). It's available on their website. Very, very well done audio drama, and extremely faithful to the text.

MemberOvomorphApr-18-2012 11:16 PMThanks for mentioning the short story. It can be found at the following link and appears to be around 54 pages long.

IMDB was reporting that it was to be made into a movie, but as of April 2011 the project was cancelled because the studio wanted it to be PG-13 and not an R rated movie. Del Toro (?) refused to go with PG-13. (sounds similar too)

MemberOvomorphApr-19-2012 12:52 AMI'm a huge Lovecraft fan (both his fiction & his nonfiction). I personally don't consider Alien to be Lovecraftian, but I understand this point of view. You might be pleased to know that in the documentary Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown (excellent doc, btw), Guillermo Del Toro discusses what he considers to be a huge AtMoM influence on Alien (discovering a distant near-primordial that looks abandoned but subterranean exploration yields the discovery of a malignant life form). IMO, there are germs of Lovecraft influence on Alien, mostly from Dan O'Bannon & HR Giger who were admitted Lovecraft fans, but not in its final form.
IMO, John Carpenter's The Thing is one of the most Lovecraftian films ever made. Even though it's not a Lovecraft adaptation, you'll find even more Mountains of Madness parallels in The Thing than you have with Prometheus/Alien! (It's based on John W Campbell's "Who Goes There?", which has it's own parallels with Lovecraft's novella.)

MemberOvomorphApr-19-2012 1:09 AMI remember being in high school and reading the story at night with a cup of hot chocolate. That's why I was surprised to read an article that said that James Cameron is doing 3D consultation on the movie with Guillermo del Toro and that according to Cameron it's on par with Aliens. Too bad it didn't go through apparently.

MemberOvomorphApr-19-2012 1:34 AMI don't agree with the 3D, but it is still sad that no one can make a good HP Lovecraft movie. Ridley would do a great job with one of his stories and Del Toro is the only other one with the vision that I can see working. I agree with GG Pan about The Thing, it is very Lovecraft.
