Thoughts on this... Ok, I know it supposed to be a "scientific" expedition, but I was taking another look at the released "official" Weyland industries timeline leading up to 2075ish (before the mission gets underway) and there seem to be HUGE number of patents for New weapons tech as well as the aquiring of Northrup, BAE systems, etc, etc. There are just as many weapons entries in the timeline as there are other developments. And ALL of the mentioned developments seem to be trying to tie in to the other events following 79's Alien, so it got me thinking... Are some of these weapon patents in the timeline specifically there to relate to the Prometheus story? Also, it seems to show that the interplanetary force of marines or whatever is established well before the events of the Prometheus getting underway and 79's Alien and Cameron's Aliens. It doesn't seem quite logical that a business corporation would be helping to found "armies" for battle in space... I don't even believe ANY other lifeforms (besides us) have been discovered yet. It seems a little strange that an interplanetary army is being formed to simply interdict possible "smugglers"?? Could it be that Weyland has a possible hint of something else out there? and he wants to be ready to "battle" them in his quest to find "whatever the heck" he is ultimately seeking?? Here is a pretty good link the the Weyland Patent and Corporate News Timeline (looks like a blog from a Canadian).... (Hope its ok to link to this.. if not, maybe someone can provide a link to simple text version of the timeline?? I had one before but cant seem to find it now :( ..) Well Weyland has staff working at, what? 36 other off world colonies out there ... so all his products are distributed to them not just on the Prometheus ... I would say imho weaponry is limited to individuals ... but saying that we don't know what other species the other colonies have met ... But a good point raised tho Phil ...

It just struck me that if you go over it, it seems like his youth and young adult life is consumed with aiding the human race in a non-destructive manner... I mean he is coming up with cures for CANCER!! new replenishable energy sources, global warming and the polar ice caps, getting Noble Peace prizes, etc, etc. etc!!! And then around 2025ish its like a switch gets flicked in his mind and that he is obsessed with advanced weaponary and the colonization or conquering?? of deep space... almost as if he has become aware of some dark secret and that he knows that if he wants it, he is probably going to have take it by force!!

This entry from the timeline (at least 40 years prior to Prometheus launch is also very intriguing. Could a certain "someone" have been a part of this exploration crew???.... JANUARY 17TH, 2034 - HELIADES Weyland Industries introduces the first FTL-capable SEV (space exploration vehicle.) (Notes: In Greek myth, the Heliades -'children of the sun'- were the offspring of Helios the sun god and the Oceanid Clymene, the latter of whom is also the mother of several Titans - including Prometheus)

I think that if "Prometheus" was weaponized they would not feel the need to crash the ship unto the still not derelicted Derelict, dying in this very process.... :) Still, I think this is a weak point in the movie. Scott must come with a good explanation for this. The only explanation I can think of is that albeit the future world is a place of powerful corporations, the government still has a modicum of control over the monopoly of force and forbids private vessels of carrying weapons. Weyland would be eager to comply, mainly if they were trying to hide the real nature of their mission from other parties.

Even Stephen Hawking believes we should be very careful about seeking contact with ETs, based on the fact that the evolution/support of a large brain requires a caloric intake which only predation can provide. In other words, anything we meet out there will have a history of violence.

@CanadaPhil While your point is valid, I think it's easy to write off the reasoning for Space worthy Marines via. Corporate Industry interdiction needs right here on Earth. Having a weapons platform w/ troops capable of deploying (into orbit) from the U.S. and then dropping in over a zone the corporation deems necessary for asset security is not that far fetched and would save time and money getting that craft/troops to the area of operations. It would make a great precursor for offworld deployment, standard operating procedures.

Sure Centrosphere... But we could also just as easily say that after EXHAUSTING whatever firepower they may have had, Janek in desperation decides to RAM... but I still think that there is a TON of misdirection going on in that sequence. Also, if you really read between the lines of the timeline, it sounds like Corporations (especially Weylands!) are becoming MORE powerful than governments.

@Sabot... Sure.. I agree completely with that, but something else just does not seem quite right here. This is supposedly a guy who by 35 had basically come up a means for completely sustainable clean energy, solved all of Earth's climate issues (which would probably logically follow that world food production is also now level and sustainable and CURED CANCER!! We then almost overnight, go from a guy who has seemingly solved EVERYTHING and ACHIEVED EVERTHING, yet now is fixated on developing weapons specifically for use in SPACE and in Zero-G (sounds like it anyway) and all kinds of atmospheres?? It even kind of sounds like the schools he is setting up for underpriviledged youth and or the penal facilities are possibly a means of indoctrinating legions of loyal followers to do Weylands future bidding?? Im really interested about the whole Weyland story arc now. I think its curious that there is really no other mention of the HELIADES so far in any movie info.. It obviously sounds like a mission that PRECEEDED the Prometheus by decades... What did it uncover??

Yes, CanadaPhil.........the engines seem to strike first, which makes no sense, unless the Prometheus is braking hard, or it's the SJ ship which is actually ramming the Prometheus from behind.

@ CanadaPhil Yeah, I guess the real question is how far has the societies as a whole on Earth progressed. But, since the Nostromo was an ore vessel we can assume at least that other resources may now be scarce and still cause turbulence. That's one of the things I liked about the Aliens movies, as Mr. Cameron put it, it's the "used space" look. That to me was always contrary to Star Trek which is a very flowery, hopeful future. A future not unlike the one that would transpire if indeed Peter Weyland did fix all of our problems. Who know. definately looking forward to the movie though. Take care.

maybe RS and DL are going to run prometheus right into alien and the next film will be the Heliades running into the Prometheus film. it would be new ground (mostly) in film making--telling the story backwards but at w whole film level instead of chapters in 1 film. ( sorry @CandaPhil-I'm off topic))

It's a shame that the ship doesn't have weaponised drones of a kind. Modern day tech goes down the drain...

@ Heustess... Who knows. Whos to say the Prometheus doesn't have a number of nuclear tipped missiles or an electromagnetic Railgun. ((could have been justified for use in dealing with asteroids or meteor for that matter)) And, I just noticed that early concept art in the media section for the "rover" I guess seems to show it armed with something like a 20mm autocannon ?? Interesting... but it obviously looks like that didnt make it to the film.

@artyoh I agree with Hawking on that matter. In fact I had that mindset long before he made that statement public. The fuzzy cuddly concept of friendly aliens that Spielberg would have us believe is a steaming load. It goes against nature. And opposite history. If extraterrestrials exist and can travel great distances to other worlds, it would be best to keep a low profile. Sadly we have been ringing the dinner bell since the 70s.

Ha, Hawking. He thinks like Ozymandias! Maybe his bid to ensure world peace?
