Did Ridley Scott indirectly mention us?

I'm reading the Empire Magazine article on Prometheus and the interview with Ridley Scott. There's a part that reads like this: Empire: In 1978, when you were shooting Alien, you didn't have to contend with the internet and people analyzing your every move. Scott: I don't get where that comes from. It annoys the shit out of me, actually. So, would you want to be responsible for "annoying the shit" out of Ridley Scott, your beloved film director?

I can totally understand why he would be annoyed by it. The film will have a hard time living up to thousands of pages full of possible plots and ideas. The final film will only be able to contain 0.00000000000001% of it.

I agree. Folks are putting too much analysis into this film. The film is not about some unsolved historical mystery. It's only a movie...something to created to entertain.

It bothers me some that he would feel that way. I do understand, but also, I would hope that Ridley understands where that comes from...the pure, unadulterated love and appreciation for he's already done and the anticipation him returning to that subject matter..

The thing is he's got money, power, talent, fame, a good sense of humour and provocative ideas and he now complains about being upset by the meek of the earth? He should be more worried about his attitude towards viral publicity and his relationship with the movie industry, which is corrupt as we all know: Heaven's gate (1980), Shutter island (2010), Peter Jackson's The Hobbit... There's a long list... Also why should he complain? He's got tons of material with which he can work with, possibly some of which that can actually improve the plot. Is he complaining that he shouldn't be judged on his material? That hubristic. Why can't we have good quality cinema, with interesting interpretations around them? How is this bad, it's like he's resenting that sort of publicity, when viral adds are just obscene and vulgar, especially for a man who has achieved greatness through the hardest medium of all: a Screen displaying 24 images per second.

"It annoys the shit out of me" translation: "it strokes my enormous ego"

I don't think you should read too much into it. I'm sure he would be able to understand the points made here. It's just an interview. Sometimes people say stuff without thinking. We all do.

I think it is annoying to him because he wants to keep things "secret", to preserve his story as much as possible. After all, if you're a storyteller (as he self-confesses during almost every interview), then what can be more annoying than people trying to figure out your story before you even have a chance to tell it in its proper context and frame? I can certainly understand that. I'd be annoyed too.

We didn't create the ProjectPrometheus web site, the Weyland Indudtries web site, the release of videos and set shots, we didin't create the Peter Weyland facebook page. They (Fox, the producers, and maybe Scott himself) have created this environment themselves. They want it discussed, analysed, disected. Why else would they do it? (The last time I was invloved in this sort of discussion was for Cloverfield. It took nothing away from the movie when it came time to see it!)

All good points. I think he's annoyed at being analyzed under a microscope over this whole project; no one wants to be followed that closely. Earlier in the interview, he says that he's not as attached to his projects the way most people think; he really doesn't care for his past projects. He describes it as being like an antique salesman who is ready to sell you his most valuable dresser (or was it desk? Anyway, you get the point.). I just thought I'd post this to kind of ground things in reality and I'm sorry if it burst too many bubbles.

That doesn't surprise me Xentron and with all he has to put into each project he kind of has to approach it that way.....although, it also seems like a bit of contradictory thinking, he's also said this.... "[I've wanted to revisit it for] years! Years, years, years," he stresses, of Alien's space traveller subplot. "I always wondered when they did [Aliens] 2,3 and 4 why they hadn't touched upon that, instead of evolving into some other fantastic story. They missed the biggest question of them all: who's the big guy? And where were they going? And with what? Why that cargo? There's all kinds of questions."

For someone not attached to his projects, he sure revisits them enough...Maybe it is purely for the money though. Oh, and if my actions of being interested in his film in a day in age where all media created is instantly accessible? Maybe he should be happy. Happy that people will still pay to see his movies, and happy that some of his old fans are interested again. And if not? Fuck'em.

There should be a difference between fans and those in the industry who are intrusted with sensitive materials who break secrecy and leak information. Fans can either be seen as a benefit or a hindrance, and I'd rather be seen as a benefit than the single source of blame for spoiling secrets to fun projects like a movie.

If I annoy him, then I no longer admire him.It goes hand in hand. Was he annoyed when he caved into Fox?Was he annoyed when he had Lindelof thrown upon him?Was he annoyed when he walked away from the franchise years ago?If we annoy him then the Limey SOB should give us all of our money back. Then he should get a job at Mcdonald's.I gaurantee he will get a ton of gratitude and see that we are the compliment that only a good film maker gets!!!!

Was he annoyed when we all became fans of his work? Is he annoyed at the level of interest we show in his work? Do we bombard him with fanmail or fan Email or stalk him? Well, some people might :-P but he should be appreciative that people think he's worth enough as a movie director to want to bother seeing anything he's made or associated with because he knows how to entertain us. Mostly. I will never again go to see a Michael Bay movie, because he fucked Transformers for me. Teased me with Unicron and didn't follow through........... So he loses part of my cinema budget. Simple.

"...The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely, [...] The insolence of office and the spurns That patient merit of the unworthy takes..." Sums up pretty much Ridley's Scott attitude for now.
