MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 6:51 AMHey Guys,
It it our animated GIF's?
I'll replace mine with a static one if I need to.
Please advise.
Thanks.
Gavin
MemberTrilobiteMar-08-2012 10:05 AM@ DB, I think so, as soon as i changed mine I noticed an improvement in loading, but some pages still take a while when there are a lot of gifs, so IMO iy looks like the gifs are the culprit!
P.S. Hows the wife, LOL

AdminEngineerMar-08-2012 10:40 AMHi everyone,
Yes the GIFs are using up a lot of memory when visiting the site - that's why it may be slow for some users. For me, thankfully my internet is fairly fast so I don't experience these down times. But I aim to make this site accessible and quick for everyone.
I will be changing my GIF and asking that others do the same. As much fun as they are, the forums are getting too big now to allow them for speed's sake.
Also, with the latest improvement of session time, if you don't click "LOG OUT" when you leave, your session remains active and is constantly being called by the database, so in logging out properly and not just closing your browser when leaving, you will help speed up the forums as well that way. Just a thought.
But thank you very much to Ripley Clone 8 for his generous works in creating GIFs for many of us. I will keep mine and the ones hosted on our server for those select users so that we may keep them for later. If the forums slow down after the film's release we can bring them back.
But for now, if we could all update to a static profile pic, that would be most appreciated.
Thanks everyone, and sorry for the lagging for those experiencing it.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 10:48 AM@Bughunter: thank you for addressing this
i too thought it might have been these cool looking GIFs, but after posting
this topic, i noticed that once the awesome looking hi-res Orrery image loads
that is in the back round, i am able to navigate this site without the initial
loading problems that compelled me to start this thread
guess i need a bit more patience when i come here
i wasn't aware that the GIFs
that folks use on here take up memory
hope you are able to resolve that issue if needed
again, much thanx for the clarification
Chris
AdminEngineerMar-08-2012 10:56 AMAh yes, the background as well. If you haven't visited the site in a few days, just click REFRESH and let the page load. Once its done, your browser loads faster cause its already downloaded the image.
The new Orrey background spans I think its 3000 pixels wide... so yeah it's a big one.
But also the GIFs were bogging the server down quite a bit. Especially the ones that went through a full scene from one of the movies. 10 MB some of them are.
So yeah, I've changed mine to the new default profile pic. When others do the same, you should notice an improvement.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 11:18 AM@Bughunter: i will do that. refresh the page.
the Orrery back drop looks very, very cool!
10MB for one GIF....wow! and eeeks!
sucks that they are taking up so much memory, i was tempted to upload
one, but i decided the Ron Cobb "HAZARD" standard i made in Illustrator
would have to do.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 1:07 PM I will try to remember to log out in the future also. I am having problems getting on here sometimes but i think its because i use google chrome and i have been experiencing issues with that as well.

MemberOvomorphMar-08-2012 1:16 PMYour welcome everyone! Thankfully a week or two ago I was able to upgrade my Photobucket account now i'm able to upload any GIF image to the Photobucket server instead of posting it on Postimage.org and having BH upload them to this server. GIF images can be quite memory hogs but depending on the server your using it from it can affect the server. I know Bug Hunter knows more about computer tech then I do but maybe uploading them to the photobucket server instead of uploading them to this server might break the problem. I'm not sure. I just thought that might be a solution.
Also I keep getting this message:
Internal Server Error

MemberOvomorphMar-12-2012 11:22 AMIts not your cache.
Its not the gifs.
Its the background image on the site itself. Its a huge file and the site owner should resize it for web and render it as a compressed png file.
I do wordpress sites for a living. This is a nice little site and I dig it. That one change would make the site lighting fast!
Gavin
MemberTrilobiteMar-12-2012 12:02 PM@ Flacvinyl - its not just the background, I've had problems whenever there are lots of gifs in a thread, thus the gifs were the main culprit. Since most of us have reverted back to still images I have noticed a massive improvement in loading times!
