Because, in general, the members of these forums usually come across as more intelligent and open minded than those of other forums I am wondering what your opinions are regarding the following three films: AVP AVPR Predators In other forums the general consensus seems to be that the AVP's are atrocities that should be crucified, whereas Predators is accepted and welcomed. I will add my opinions in due course on these films, but I am curious as to what your opinions are regarding these three movies. Not just how good or how bad they are, but also your opinion on the ideas they added to the pot.

AVP: Pretty terrible. It lacked a plot, decent dialogue, and anything remotely interesting. It used the various stages of the Alien life cycle in several pointless set pieces. For my money it was a terrible rip of that just regurgitated elements of the previous films. The back story behind the whole film was fairly diabolical too. It felt like it was written by a fourteen year old, never mind an actual adult. Oh an the acting was horrific (especially from the main character, can't remember her name; that black girl). AVPR: More of the same, but with added shoddy creature design and less likeable characters. Predators: This benefited from a higher production value, great cinematography, scenery shots and sets. Some interesting interactions and deaths. But most of all WAAAY too linear with the added smattering of bad dialogue.

To be honest, i'm on the fence with the AVP films, I tend to go through phases of liking and disliking them. Predators was a pretty average affair but i do quite like it, it was just a bit to predictable. I think the original AVP novels would make a good trilogy, Prey, War & Hunters planet.

I pretty much agree with Mentos on AVP, AVPR, and Predators. But I will say that I liked the creature design in AVPR. (Of course its not even remotely close to the designs for ALIEN or Aliens, but its still good imo.)

Ok,shite and ok. Predators was a real let down for me, could of been so much better. I refuse to class avp/avpr as canon to the Alien films, they are Predator movies to me.

AVP I thought was a half decent effort with a decent character or two. The whole idea had some credence considering what is coming in June and what was written 30 years ago. Unfortunately the heroine was a disaster. It tried to encapsulate too much into one movie and hence most scenes were rushed and didn’t offer enough detail or time to dwell on. Interesting that it seemed to be a stand alone movie killing off Weyland and the total destruction of the temple only to end up with a xeno getting loose on the ship. AVP was total muck and that’s being kind. Predators wasn’t bad with a good slow build up and development of characters with Morpheus turning up to put in a reasonable performance. Again the heroine was totally unconvincing and poorly cast. She had difficulty just holding the dam gun. Thought the predator home planet made little sense. How can such a technologically advanced race live like dogs in a forest? The whole predator makeup makes no sense. No in depth analysis of the predator way of life or history was offered so at this stage all we know is they are sophisticated blood thirsty half breed like animals. The final scene was just an excuse for a blood bath.

i always thought the basis of these films was just getting two bad-ass aliens together in a fight to see who would win. the story lines were an afterthought. although predators was a pretty decent addition to the predator films, i thought. the xenomorphs may be calculating and devious, but they also portray a very primitive intellect. the predators seem to possess a much more complex intellect and they utilize high technology. they also possess a sort-of grace in their gestures.

i did really hate AVP ...so plain ...people dyng one by one ...its a movie ive watched 1 time . AVPR not so bad to me ..pretty enjoyable but on the lines of Piranha 3d ( but worse in all aspects ) ... it really mess at the end and lose focus to put togheter some gratuitus things and not focusing on something great ( the place overrunned by aliens should have been a great spectacle ).. a very 80s movie and that was not SO bad . still ive watched it 1 time ... PRedators ...ive watched first 20 minutes and then started to think my own things ..and that is not a good sign ...ive to watch it again . they shouldnt never mix the 2 things

@ Micro changes in air density I believe the planet in Predators was NOT the Predator home planet. Its just a predator hunting resort (at least that's the way the script made it seem). Hence Laurence F. saying that the predators came back every so often for hunting season.

Not very well made but Lots of Fun to watch, and completely without any credibility what so ever in Ridley Scott's Universe!!!

AVP: I freakin' hate Paul Andersen. It was too Hollywood-ish and slightly cartoony. I don't think the aliens and predators would be performing wrestling moves on each other the way they did in the movie. AVPR: It was too much of a B-monster movie. The suburban setting was more appropriate in The Blob and did not fit at all. The reason they set it on earth was to cut back on the budget, of course. Long story short: Keep the freakin' franchise crossover crap to Freddy and Jason. Predators: Was very similar in structure to Predator, but with twists here and there. None of the characters were nearly as badass as Dutch and his team, but the writers attempted to make up for it with overuse of "harsh language" (a typical Hollywood trick). Set on an alien planet that looks conveniently like earth (again, for budgetary reasons). It may have been a smarter film and actually touched more on actual hunting strategy than the first. Its only failing was that it wasn't as memorable or fun as the first.

AvP: Failed attempt at Ancient Astronaut Tie-in with the Predators and the archeologist in Mexico. But does effectively tie Xenos to the Predators. The Morphing Pyramid was kinda cool but not with it buried under 2,000ft of ice on an island. I really liked the netted Alien cross hatch pattern on its dome. Yay o/ they brought the smooth dome back and the Queen was badass. I think this is the actual prequel to Alien albeit it being 90% Predator movie with an Alien twist. Scary thought that their could be a live queen in the ocean though...Bet Weyland would love to find that. AvP:R: To Ressurectionist with DNA Morphing broughtout with the Predator Strained Xeno. The blonde chick was hot but got shishkabobbed with the giant ass claw type blade that grew in size almsot instantly. Really? Does pose a question at the end with Ms. Yutani and the gun not being "for this world" Predators: Interesting but too Techy oriented with flying drones and different shoulder canons. The original gave the single Predator 1 Helmet, 1 Shoulder Canon and 1 Wrist Blade, nothing more. I mean when you go hunting how many hunters trio up bring 4 rifles, 3 scopes, 10 calls, 5 ruts, and another hunter to use for bait? Not me give me 1 Rifle, 1 Knife, and a blind and good to roll.

On side note I would love to see a good sequel to Predator 2. P2 was just to Mel Gibsoninated with Danny Glover but it did have dorky Hudson in it :P

AVP: pissed me off! I had such high hopes. A queen had been on earth all this time? So unbelievable. Why did they not use any of the material from the Darkhorse comics from the early 90's. That stuff was awesome, and that's what I was expecting. AVPR: the first few minutes were pretty cool. Xeno gets loose, alarms go off, Predator home world alerted. I went in with low expectations because again, the idea of Xenos getting turned loose on Earth with any outcome other than total Human extinction is just not realistic to me. Some cool kill shots, chest bursting a kid, etc. Hated the emotional subplots. I didn't care about anyone, wanted them all to die. I appreciated the Strauss brothers efforts, but they aren't directors... good ones anyways. Predators: I loved this flick! Everything was just full of epic win for me... except for Topher's character thinking he would be buddies with the Predators... that was kind of lame. I felt it stayed very true to what the Predator Race is all about. re: Predator 2. I also liked this one a lot too. I remember seeing it get like 1.5 stars for review avg and went thinking I would be disappointed. I liked all the directions it took, and the ending was pretty cool.

Only watched AVP of these three - schlocky, formulaic trash (with high production values) that intermittently engages. Having the Aliens in it at all (NOT in CGI) gives it some value for me as I love to watch these hideous/beautiful beasties in action, be it washing the dishes, testing out their confinement or merely doing battle with those muscular, dreadlocked Space Samurai.

Well, having started this thread a week ago I think its time i added my opinions... AVP - Good premise, good idea, doesn't interfere too much with whats considered canon. But, bad direction, really bad acting, Predators were too bulky and plastic looking, Aliens were better. Never dwelled long enough on characters or ideas. AVPR - Again good premise, good idea, but completely ignored canon. Bad direction and editing, acting was better, but not much. Predator was kick ass (toughest to date) but the aliens were background characters. Predalien, meh, would be more acceptable without the "teenage queen element". On a side note - I think the production values were back to front with AVP and AVPR, each would have benefited from the others production values. AVP should have been darker and low key, and AVPR should have been a bit more extravagent and higher values. Predators - Started of well, became formulaic - essentially copying the first. Nice idea with the black predators feuding, and their different rules, but I felt only some of the characters shouldn't have been there (Russian and Isabelle). Added to the franchise, but not by much.

I was really let down by AVP. I didn't like the connection to ancient astronauts even though that was what originally piqued my interest. Pyramids are cool, but these pyramids didn't look ancient and the story was just not believable at all. You can take something like a facehugger in ALIEN and make it look so creepy and alive and then you can make a facehugger fly thru the air in slow-motion, matrix style with it's little proboscis thingy visible and just ruin it completely. Especially with a ridiculously short incubation period. AVP felt rushed like a saturday morning cartoon. If I were to watch any of the other AVP movies, I'd have to be drinking prior to agreeing anyway and I'd have to be drinking during the movie. I am not trying to be a snob, but there you have it... when it comes to ALIEN I guess I am. Maybe a xenomorph and a predator are an even match in a fight, idk, but the predator is nowhere as brilliant and as alien as the xenomorph if that makes sense. I think of predators as a race of extraterrestrial beings and I think of xenomorphs as a symbol for a lot of different things. Predators are kinda cool in a way and I'm okay with them existing in the same universe, I guess, but the same way that "Archturians" exist in ALIENS, you know... just briefly mentioned. I loved both ALIEN and ALIENS and I love Predator. Predator 2 not so much. I guess I should watch Predators... maybe next time I want to drink. A lot. To sum it up: Alien=Amazing (changed my life) Aliens=Cool Predator=Cool Predator2=meh Aliens+Predators=NOT COOL!!

So the comics for the most part of AVP, Aliens and Predator....AWESOME! The AVP films until the humans story line came into play pretty much sucked. But we have Hollywood to blame for that. Contrary to popular belief I loved Predators! I am looking forward to the next one! But the AVP movies could've been real good had they followed the comics like anything else. Actually if both movies took place on another planet would've been a great start. Someone on this forum said it best that these movies were marketed as slasher flicks. I have to agree with that statement. I do have to say that the overall costumes for the Xeno's and Preds were cool and the Wolf Pred ruled! The AVP movies were so embarrasing to watch when the humans came into play espicially the briefing part for example when the guy said "laugh it up" or in requiem when the guy yells " get to the chopper!" I mean these idiots that made these movies must HATE science fiction to do something like that! I bet if Simon Pegg put these together they would have the right amount of violence to where it is tasteless, the right amount of humor to where you are not feeling like Michael Bay co wrote the thing, the right type of dialogue to where the tension is thick in the air that you could spread it on toast. Those movies just broke my heart!

avp in my opinion was ok... not great but ok, and i kinda liked some of the plot... again... it was ok... atleast it tried with plot and characters... couldve used a lil gore avpr... predalien= good design in a way, had the gore that avp lacked. didnt show any attempt at a decent plot or characters where avp did show some effort in... overall i never bought this one... probably never will... predators was in my opinion a great comback for the predator franchise, obviousely it wont ever live upto the first movie... but i found it enjoyable and a bit different. definently better then the avp films... future avp and predator films... the next avp should be in space... and focus a bit on the novels and the people that work on it should follow the example of the novels and some of the games. the next predator should have some better lines and a bit more of an original plot.

Why did so many people hate the AVP movies? I personally enjoyed both of them and thought they tied pred and alien together well. I also thought it was cool how they gave info on how weylan or weyland yutani was around for a long time and how the partnership was sorta formed.

I must admit that I expected an AVP 3. My wish was that this was carried out in the terrifying and dark corners of deep space, with the weyland yutani undertaking in an epic crusade of stellar conquest, and all this to make the Space Jockeys his grand final appearance. In AVP, we see that the Predators brought the xenomorphs to the Earth, but not who created them. Also saw that in the Hall of trophies Yautja had a skull of Space Jockey, this already can assume as it was the Predators found the race of the Xenomorphs. In my opinion the crossover might be legendary if they had the right direction.
