Today Latino Review reported that Viola Davis has reportedly been cast in the role of Amanda Waller for Suicide Squad. Her previous and current roles have included 'How to get away with Murder' and 'Ender's game'. This role would cast her in a pivotal role in the DCU. In the DC comics, Amanda Waller is a government agent in charge of the Suicide Squad, which is a top secret task force of supervillians.
This news comes on the heels of the previous casting news from a few weeks ago, wherin almost the entire cast of the movie was officially unveiled. Most notably missing was Amanda Waller, which now seems to be confirmed for now. In the current comics continuity, Amanda Waller is responsible for personally recruiting many of these villains into squad, and also is responsible for supervising them.
It is notable that in the comics, Amanda Waller is often antagonistic and suspicious towards the heroes as she is of the villains. She most notably recruits villains immediately after they have been jailed or defeated by heroes. Also, this may indicate that she has potential to appear in other films in the DCU, with her connection to the Suicide Squad, as she gives them orders.
Suicide Squad is currently set for release on August 5, 2016. Justin Marks will be writing the Screenplay, and David Ayer is assigned to directing the movie. It will be the third installment in the DCU after Dawn of Justice, and the first DC movie to be centered directly around villains. Shooting begins in april, after two months of pre-production in Toronto, Canada.
