We all know that the video game industry generates more economy than the movie, music and TV industries combined, but did you know that in the UK the video games industry injects over £1.2 billion into the UK economy, yet within the UK the industry and developers within the UK are not supported by the economy it supports. Although most UK colleges and universities now offer courses related to video game design, coding, and 3D environmental mapping there is no support from any recognizable body or organization (outside of gaming trade bodies TIGA and Ukie) within the British economy that supports those that wish to pursue a career within the video games industry, or that support and champion the cultural impact of the video games industry upon the British economy. To introduce the BGI (British Games Institute) and better call for your support here is Mark Turpin (Turps) CEO of the Yogscast, a UK based team of gamer VOD and stream content creators that was founded by Lewis Brindley and Simon Lane in 2008...
Some may feel that the UK governments money is better spent investing in its free health service, the NHS or into social housing, or to relieve the pressure on the countries emergency services. The BGI is not asking for taxpayers money, but only for its share of the money already allocated toward supporting the countries economic sector. The UK Governments support of the BGI should be a foregone conclusion considering the investment the video game industry makes to the UK economy and AAA developers based within the UK such as Rockstar North, Rocksteady Studios, Codemasters, and Rebellion (amongst many others), along with the rising number of British VOD and stream hosts, and the myriad of video game conventions held in the UK such as Insomnia, EGX and MCM.
Supporting the BGI will further help support and bolster the UK economy, create jobs within the industry and awareness into one of the UK and the worlds leading commercial industries. You can read more about the BGI HERE or sign the online petition to support the BGI HERE.
We here at Scified, Mark Turpin and The Yogscast, and the BGI look forward to your support.
