Appearing in the closing moments of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Skellig Michael is the largest of the two Skellig islands situated off the south-west coast of Ireland. The site of a 6th (or 8th) Century Monastery, the island and it's iconic winding stone steps has been dubbed Jedi Island by Star Wars fans after it was revealed to be the hiding place of the last Jedi Luke Skywalker...

In September of last year the production team for Rian Johnson's Star Wars Episode VIII returned to the island to film scenes for the movies opening moments. Irish newspper The Irish Mirror have reported that due to "environmental reasons" Lucasfilm will not be returning to film at the location which has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
