Based on the DC Comic formerly known as Hellblazer, the forthcoming TV series Constantine follows the misadventures and exploits of its title character John Constantine, a con man, skilled magician and occult detective. The comic book was last adapted, for the big screen, with 2005's Constantine starring Keanu Reeves, Shia LeBeouf, Rachel Weisz and Tilda Swinton. Though the movie adaptation was recieved well by general audiences, the Americanization of the title character upset fans of the comic book original.
John Constantine was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissett, John Totleben and Jamie Delano for DC, and first appeared in the comic book Saga of the Swamp Thing #37, which was published in June 1985. John Constantines appearance was based on that of British rock legend Gordon Sumner, better known simply as Sting. The Character appeared as a main character in the comic book Hellblazer since, until last year when the character finally got his own, self titled comic book publication.
