Thirty years ago, the landmark commercial paved the way for big-budget television advertisements and brought Apple into the mainstream.
Directed by Ridley Scott, the ad aired during the Superbowl on January 22, 1984, and its narrative is now famous. A room full of blank faced men focusing on a broadcast of a Big Brother figure on a giant television screen, until an athletic woman bursts in and runs down a center aisle, wielding a giant hammer. She hurls it at the screen, which explodes into a blinding light, breaking the hold he has on them.
The science fiction-like display of iconoclasm versus conformity is then explained in a message that appears onscreen: 'On January 24, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh. And you'll see why 1984 won't be like 1984.'
