Prometheus fans get ready! In a new interview with German movie site, FilmFutter, director of Alien, Prometheus and its sequel, Prometheus 2, Ridley Scott, once again shed some more light on his plans with this new universe and how he plans to expand it while maintaining some link to the Alien franchise from which it was born.
When asked if Prometheus 2 would answer those burning questions Alien fans have been waiting for and finally link to the 1979 classic; explaining how the Derelict ended up on LV-426, Scott replied by saying:
“Yes, but it won’t be in the next one. It will be in the one after this one or maybe even a fourth film before we get back into the ‘Alien’ franchise… The whole point of it is to explain the Alien franchise and to explain the how and why of the creation of the Alien itself. I always thought of the Alien as kind of a piece of bacterial warfare. I always thought that that original ship, which I call the Croissant, was a battleship, holding these biomechanoid creatures that were all about destruction."
Now, we already knew 20th Cenutry Fox was planning a new trilogy for the Prometheus franchise from the beginning - especially since Prometheus itself did well at the box office. But what we did not know is that the franchise could expand into a quadrilogy.
Considering all the questions needing answers, it's likely Fox may pursue more than just 3 sequels - spin-off films like what Star Wars is doing may be something they're considering as well - diving deep into the mythology more specifically with individual movies. Such spin-off films could look at the 'Creators' from the beginning of Prometheus, others could attempt to explain the facilities on LV-223 and how they came to exist. You could almost call Alien and its sequels a "spin-off" of Prometheus in a sense as well and with Blomkamp's Alien 5 already in the works, its unlikely Fox has any plans of slowing down with this beloved franchise.
