Unlike the US and the UK, China does not have an age restriction system for motion pictures, so any movie hoping for release across China has to be deemed suitable for all audiences by the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television, the Chinese equivalent of the MPAA and the BBFC. A loophole does exist, whereby if Hollywood studios work with their Chinese counterparts in the Chinese movie industry, the movie is recognized by S.A.R.F.T. as a co-production and not a foreign movie. Such co-productions require that scripts are submitted in advance to S.A.R.F.T., with the organization scrutinizing every aspect of the movie during its production to ensure there is no deviation in the final product.
Movies such as Kung Fu Panda 3 and Transformers: Age of Extinction, have embraced the close monitoring of the Chinese censors to ensure their movies will see release in China, now considered the second biggest cinema viewing audience behind the US. Studios have also taken advantage of the fact that Chinese audiences are unaware of western critical and public opinion with Chinese cinemagoers seemingly willing to watch any western movie that garners a release.
Unfortunately, for Paul Feig and Amy Pascal, the Ghostbusters reboot won't even make it past S.A.R.F.T. because of the movie's underlying theme - Ghosts. Movies that depict the spirits of the dead are considered unsuitable for all audiences by S.A.R.F.T. and are therefore banned from official distribution across China. Both of the original movies were also banned in China for this very reason.
With opinion having garnered mixed to negative reviews thus far following the reboot's release in the UK earlier this week, supporters of the movie may have been hoping that the Chinese audiences would boost box office takings, as was the case with Terminator Genisys. With the Ghostbusters reboot not being released in China its fate is in the hands of western audiences, most of which will have witnessed some of the needless social politics surrounding this movie.
As for my review of the Ghostbusters reboot, once I have seen the movie I will post my open and honest opinion.
