Disney aren't wasting any time to reap the benefits of their acquisition of LucasFilm and the Star Wars film franchise. While films like the Han Solo Star Wars Story spin-off, Episode 9 and other side projects currently occupy Disney's line-up of upcoming blockbusters set in the Galaxy far far away, they have just announced that they have planned yet ANOTHER trilogy set in the Star Wars universe. Director of next month's release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson has been tapped once again by the studio to both write and direct this new trilogy:
Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.
As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.
Obviously, this new trilogy will be completely separate from the episodic Skywalker saga and will introduce us to a plethora of new characters based in the same galaxy. However what we're curious about is how this will fit in with the episodic saga and how the interactions of this new trilogy's characters may affect or have been affected by those from the previous instalments.
What direction do you hope Johnson and Disney take with this new trilogy? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
No official titles or release dates for the new Star Wars trilogy have yet been revealed.
