Mortal Kombat has officially been crowned second best box office debut of the pandemic era, sitting behind Godzilla vs. Kong! A double-win for Warner Brothers, Mortal Kombat managed to earn itself an impressive $22.5 million at the box office! That figure was not far off from Godzilla vs. Kong's $31 million debut last month.
It's clear moviegoers are longing to return to theaters, the pandemic fatigue is growing stronger and these figures are indicative of that. Both Mortal Kombat and Godzilla vs. Kong managed to earn significant returns despite nearly half of theaters in North America still remaining closed to public access.
With a reported $55 million budget, Mortal Kombat is on track to surpass its break-even point if trends continue!
Directed by Simon McQuoid, based on a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, Mortal Kombat II stars newcomer Karl Urban as Johnny Cage! Cast also includes Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, with returning stars Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion.
Mortal Kombat 2's official release date is set for May 15th, 2026!
