Entertainment Weekly released an exclusive look at Kong from Kong: Skull Island with an interview from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts about the direction he took this incarnation of the iconic beast.

In Peter Jackson's 2005 version Kong was modeled after modern gorillas, particularly silverbacks. Vogt-Roberts opted to go for the more fanciful and movie-monster approach:

"We sort of went back to the 1933 version in the sense that he’s a bipedal creature that walks in an upright position, as opposed to the anthropomorphic, anatomically correct silverback gorilla that walks on all fours. Our Kong was intended to say, like, this isn’t just a big gorilla or a big monkey. This is something that is its own species. It has its own set of rules."

Vogt-Roberts also acknowledged Kong's fur is brown, coincidentally the same color Toho's Kong was in 1962 and 1967. And for those worried that Kong: Skull Island will play hide-and-seek with its title creature like Godzilla '14--He's got you covered:

"We’re also fundamentally not playing the same game that Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla did and most monster movies do, which I’m sort of sick of the notion that a monster movie needs to wait an hour or 40 minutes until the creature shows up."

Still hard to tell really what I think.

It will be easier when we get close to a full body shot.

I already appreciate what I've seen so far more than Jackson's version. Minor nitpick, but he looks a little thin in this particular shot, but I'm sure its just the angle.

InitiateMember425 XPNov-10-2016 9:13 AM

He seems like bigfoot or something based on that shot if you put it with the somewhat lanky appearance of his lower body in the first trailer.

He is supposed to be young so maybe he's still got so bulking up to do.

^I agree.  Hopefully he'll be around the size of Godzilla 2014 by the time they fight

"There’s obviously a huge power to him, but there’s a sadness contained within his animation. The way that he walks and his facial capture fused with this very energetic, young Kong at the same time."

Kong being acknowledged as young definitely makes the whole idea interesting. I wonder how much of his design will be possibly tweaked by 2020?

2KMember4115 XPNov-10-2016 9:24 AM

^Most likely a spike in size

Probably largely depends general audience reaction to him.

Any complaints lookwise could be conveniently attributed to adolescence

He would also look older

I'm loving this design! He does look a bit thin, but remember too Kong is relatively young in this movie. He'll likely bulk up before his match up with Godzilla.

GMAN2887 - Oh, how very neat! I greatly enjoy the design! It reminds me of Ray Harryhausen's work! :)

The King of the Monsters

I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. It's nice to see Legendary embracing the mythical fantasy angle to Kong and trying to make him look like a unique distinctive creature, rather than just an overgrown silverback gorilla like in 2005. The design seems like a nice mixture of the original 1933 Kong and the Toho Kongs. I imagine when he does finally throw down with Godzilla in 2020, aside from a size boost, he will look old and hardened, compared to his "young and energetic" look here. This film could develop Kong earlier in his life and show how he became "King Kong," while Godzilla vs. Kong will feature an older and more experienced Kong past his prime. It would be interesting to see that kind of battle, considering that I often look at the Legendary Godzilla being sort of past his prime as well.

GMAN2887 - Hmm...I am also somewhat reminded of the Kong from the 1980's film starring Jeff Bridges. :)

I like this look for Kong. It looks like an updated version of the 1962 King Kong. I can't wait to see him in action.

I also like how they're going back to Kong's roots. He is his own animal. The rules of nature don't apply to kaiju. If they did, every giant monster wouldn't be able to stand and would suffocate under their own weight.

"The rules of nature don't apply to kaiju."

Good sentence.

I like the new design. It really resembles the 1933 Kong.

I like it a lot. I'm also glad that they will not play "hide the monster", Even though I thought G'14 was pretty good.

Lovin' it. He looks ferocious. I'm really looking forward to this.

My God... he's frigging gorgeous!!!! They nailed it.  Totally and completely.  He looks so much like the 1933 design, I want to cry.  Absolutely beautiful.

Is it March yet?

Yes, definitely nice throwback design there.

looks like an a** kickin' son of a b**ch. Can't wait to see the movie now. LAWS OF NATURE.. HA!.. we really don't know if a monster that big could exist unless we actually see one for real.. which would be terrifyingly cool to see.. it's a what if scenario.. that I for one would not mind seeing. it would be mind blowing. I personally think that they could exist because life forms that are designed for their environment.. develop physically to accommodate them.. weight is not a factor IF the bones and body are developed in such a way as to allow for them to grow big while at the same time accounting for the weight. This would have to be by design and not by evolution. Believe it or not.. Gareth Edward's actually believes this.. as do I. Remember.. gravity is a theory.. but weight and density and buoyancy are real.. and who knows.. maybe "strange Beasts' did exist.. oh wait.. they did.. they called them dinosaurs in the 1800's.. but before that.. they were referred to as dragons in the ancient times.. and even the bible references them in Job.. look for leviathan and the behemoth.. and read what God himself says about their make up and abilities.. if you have not.. I recommend it. And if you see where it loosely references a hippo or alligator.. that is in error.. these were creations and something to behold. they were HUGE.. and not dinosaur huge.. these were bigger and very dangerous.  Not to mention they existed at the same time as man. Thus say's God himself to Job.
