Fans of the Terminator films will agree that Terminator Genisys has faced some heavy critisism since its plot synopsis was revealed. However, it seems the tide is about to turn in the film's favor after The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day director James Cameron publicly praised the film in this new featurette. Cameron goes one step further and even mentioned that he considers Terminator Genisys to be the true, third sequel in the franchise's series of Terminator movies. This is a huge step for Genisys, one that has us all second guessing our early critisism of the film's concepts.
While Cameron may have created the Terminator franchise and, to date, has written and directed arguably the franchises best two instalments, the unfortunate reality is that he holds no love for the franchise. Cameron had already approached Brandywine Productions with an idea for what would become Aliens before production began on the first movie. Cameron was offered the job of directing Aliens dependent upon his first movie; so to ensure creative control while directing the Terminator he sold the rights to the entire franchise to the movies producer, and his wife at the time, Gale Anne Hurd for one dollar. He even gave her a writers credit, sidelining co-writer William Wisher Jr.out of a writing credit (he was compensated with a cameo in the movie). He only returned to write and direct Terminator 2, so that he could realise his original vision of a liquid metal Terminator. After the global success of 1997's Titanic Cameron could have easily sought out and re-purchased the franchise rights before 2003's Rise of the Machines and 2009's Salvation eneter production, but instead was more contempt with his semi-retirement and the production of his Avatar franchise, for he knows that by 2019 the rights will revert back to his ownership for free.
But, with the backing of franchise creator James Cameron, it seems Terminator Genisys could bring the Terminator "back" in more ways than one. Check out the new featurette above and let us know what you think in the comments section!
