The X-Men movies have left some general audiences a little confused as to what has and hasn't happened in the timeline. Put simply the events of X-Men: First Class, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the X-Men trilogy (I, II and III) occurred in that order and resulted in the dystopian future seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Thanks to the events of the latter movie everything that happened previously after X-Men: First Class never happened. This explains why Jean Grey was still alive (rather than killed by Logan on Alcatraz Island) when future-Logan returned to his time and also explains why Ryan Reynolds became the real Deadpool (rather than the abomination created in Origins). X-Men: Apocalypse also showed the alterations in the timeline with Kurt Wagner, Scott Summers, and Jean Grey freeing Logan from his "cage" while at the Weapon X facility, showing that some events still occurred such as the Weapon X project, which gave Logan his Adamantium-laced skeleton.
The forthcoming latest addition in the X-Men movie franchise Logan, which will be Hugh Jackman's last time portraying the role, will explore the characters twilight years no doubt taking inspiration from the comic book story Old Man Logan. Unfortunately, the aforementioned classic comic book cannot be directly adapted for the big screen due to Universal Pictures currently holding the production rights to the Hulk, a key character in the comic book original.
From what we see in the above trailer Logan, which will hit theaters next March, the movie will likely show the last moments of both Wolverine and Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), while seemingly introducing X-23, a female clone of Wolverine. Another element the trailer hints at featuring for the first time on the big screen is Wolverines "Berserker Rage", which if executed well should justify the movie's reported R-rating.
