James Wan, the man behind Insidious and The Conjuring is looking to adapt H. P. Lovecraft's cult classic Cthulu into a live action movie! While Lovecraft's cosmic horror has inspired a number of sci-fi and fantasy projects over the decades but Cthulu itself never got its own film adaptation. According to Deadline however, James Wan is eager to accept the challenge of bringing The Call of Cthulu to the big screen. Not only is a film in the pipeline, but a video game adaptation is also in development to complement the film production which apparently has been quietly in production for the last 5 years!
Per Deadline:
The fund is partnering with game companies including Tencent and Tencent-owned DreamSky Technology, as well as HYJZ and Forevernine, to develop games based on the following projects, some of which have been announced and some we are revealing for the first time today:
- James Wan’s The Call of Cthulhu, Mass Extinction and GMO
Stars Collective is a producer on all the above films — most of which are in development.

Wan recently described Call Of Cthulhu, an adaptation of the classic horror short story by science-fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft., as a “dream project” and one he had been quietly working on for five years. The story involves a man investigating a demonic cult known as Cthulhu.
Other details including release date and casting remains unknown but as production continues we'll be sure to keep you updated! Given the project has been quietly developing for the last 5 years, we expect more details to surface throughout this year.
