Godzilla vs. Kong has officially surpassed $400 million in revenue at the worldwide box office and the film hasn't even released in Japan yet! Defying all odds and while combating a global pandemic, Godzilla vs. Kong has dominated the worldwide box office for 3 consecutive weeks - making it the most successful film of the Covid pandemic! With its May 14th (expected) release date in Japan and France next month, we expect these numbers to take us close to $455 million, perhaps even closer to that glorious $500 million mark!

With the release of Warner Brothers' Mortal Kombat now competing at the box office and online streaming platforms, we are seeing domestic returns start to taper off for Godzilla vs. Kong. But the staggered release dates will help bolster additional revenue well into the next month!

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-26-2021 9:12 AM

No, it's may.

Also if it does well in Japan it'll probably be the highest grossing MonsterVerse movie and don't forget it hasn't released in Europe yet.

And the monsterverse movies seem to have done well in Japan..

AdminGodzillaApr-26-2021 10:40 AM

SarcasticGoji,
Yeah, it's a good thing ticket prices for Hollywood movies are normally pretty high in Japan, otherwise the movies really aren't doing much better than the Millennium series.

Most countries rank their films' success by attendance instead of box office though. The Monsterverse movies have made a fair bit of money, but otherwise have been somewhat lacking attendance-wise. I suppose they do okay for Hollywood movies though:

Ah...

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-26-2021 10:50 AM

I probably should add, Hollywood movies don't do very well in Japan unless they're animated or a very specific franchise. (Like Star Wars or Pirates of the Caribbean.)

Most Hollywood movies made of their own IP do okay up to a point, but not normally as well as their own interpretations. (Godzilla, Pokemon.)

This was different in the 1990s when there were many more Hollywood movies than Japanese movies. But since the industry made a comeback in the 2000s, the attitude has flipped.

MemberGiganApr-26-2021 11:01 AM

yeah, I can see why.

It's kinda like how the MCU and Star Wars does very well in China but not a lot of other Hollywood projects do that well in China (I could be wrong).

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-26-2021 11:08 AM

That’s why Millennium series ended, Right?

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-26-2021 11:24 AM

probably

SarcasticGoji,
The Millennium Series was in danger of ending after Megaguirus flopped, but when Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah was a marked success, Toho decided to keep soldiering on.

Godzilla: Final Wars was intended to be the final film once announced. The only way Toho would have continued is if it made an unprecedented amount of money. (Think, Shin Godzilla.) But instead it flopped, in part because Howl's Moving Castle had come out that month and Miyazaki movies become some of the highest grossing films by default.

And then we waited 10 long years for a revival.

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 7:47 AM

10 long years until G'14 had a mediocre start to a pretty darn good MonsterVerse.

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 7:50 AM

G14 is better than GvK. Putting it out there.

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 7:55 AM

In my opinion, that is

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 8:12 AM

What makes G14 superior to GVK?

I see nothing.

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 8:18 AM

Well I see lots of things. The build up is great and even tho Goji is on for Ten minutes, it feels good still.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-27-2021 9:27 AM

"What makes G14 superior to GVK?"

Nuance to tone and detail - stronger characters - better writing - unique atmosphere to most blockbuster films - music - minimalistic approach the experimented with the suspense of the film (whether it worked or not) - Fukushima imagery - adherence to ideas and themes inspired by the original film and literature such as parallels between Ford and Godzilla relating back to themes by Joseph Campbell and  even John Bunyan - quite a good deal actually.

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 9:47 AM

Eh, the human characters are dull.

Except for Seriwaza.

I saw more nuance in the Russell family in KOTM to be totally frank.

And let me guess, GVK is your least favorite movie in the MonsterVerse due to "Mindless fun and nothing else"

If so, BRUH

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 9:49 AM

He actually praised it more than KoTm, (to my knowledge) Unlike KOTM it wasn’t trying to be anything more.

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 9:51 AM

Gimme the knowledge please.

and this image is a symbol of our arguments....

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 9:51 AM

Me and Gman's many MonsterVerse debates to be more frank.

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 9:52 AM

Have u compared his comments?
I don’t suppose you’ve seen many of the KoTM

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 9:53 AM

I've seen.

I want his GVK praise....

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 9:56 AM

I meant praise, if you compare it to his GVK comments. Not actual praise, just technically praise

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 9:59 AM

oh ok then

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-27-2021 10:00 AM

I mean, it is mindless fun and nothing else. Frankly, I just need more to go back to and 2014 provides more working thought.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-27-2021 10:02 AM

And, frankly, I'd rather have dull ones than flat out bad ones.

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 10:05 AM

Well, Imma watch The showa series more, I still need to finish some.

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-27-2021 10:07 AM

SarcasticGoji,
'Tis the right move.

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 10:08 AM

Was Madison flat out bad? No, she was great (in KOTM) then went to mediocre in GVK (sadly)

But GVK gave a coherent story, great action and VFX, and there were human characters that could've been good.  At least they tried this time...

Djdndnejwnwn

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 10:11 AM

sonictiger

In due respect I think GvK was the film that didn’t try with the characters. KOTM had some interesting arcs that could have been done better.

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 10:17 AM

Yeah

G. H. (Gman)

AdminGodzillaApr-27-2021 10:18 AM

Agreed with SarcasticGoji in that the effort in characters for GvK was borderline nonexistent. I would definitely say 2014 was much more generous "try". For as short lived as Joe Brody was, he was easily the Monsterverse's most impassioned and relatable character.

sonictiger

MemberGiganApr-27-2021 10:20 AM

I beg to differ on relatable.

Chris

AdminSpaceGodzillaApr-27-2021 11:20 AM

Bryan Cranston's Joe Brody for me will always be the most relatable and memorable character of the Monsterverse. Hands down - best performance of the series. Hard to debate that one.
