I had hoped to write on this earlier, but I also wanted to do it right and pay respect to Ms. Nakagawa's career with some modicum of research. Over the last few days Godzilla fan circles have stumbled on some very sad news. Actress Anna Nakagawa, best known to fans as Emmy Kano from Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), passed away four days ago. (October 17th, 2014) The cause was endometrial cancer. She was 49.
Anna was born August 30th, 1965 in Tokyo, Japan as Anna Kuriyama. Her filmography dates back to 1988 where she played the uyghur Princess Tsurpia in the highly acclaimed period piece, The Silk Road. The role won her a Japanese Academy Award for Best New Actress. For her role as Eri in A Sign Days (1989) she was honored with the Yokohama Film Festival, best actress award.
Her appearance in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah was bookended with various television roles and on-stage performances. Although theater continued to be a large part of her career she continued to act in films such as the 1998 crime thriller The Cure and the fantasy drama Last Quarter (2004).
Anna's last two recorded films were released in 2013. She had a part in the reflexive comedy The Intermission and played the antagonistic mother, Fumi, in the suspenseful A Pale Woman. You can watch a trailer for A Pale Woman below.
