This year will see Marvel Studios begin the third phase of their record breaking cinematic universe with this May's Captain America: Civil War. Warner Bros. will also be releasing the first crossover movie in their competing cinematic universe with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, due this March.
Having started their X-Men universe back in 2000 with director Bryan Singers debut movie in the franchise 20th Century Fox are keen to monopolise on the intellectual property of the X-Men and expand their coverage in the comic book movie genre. This year will see them release another sequel to their long running franchise with X-Men Apocalypse, as well as their first true spin-off movie with February's Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds in the title role.
Spectres Lea Seydoux will portray Bella Donna Boudreaux, Gambits first love!
Deadpool first appeared in the ill fated X-Men: Origins - Wolverine, as did fellow mutant Remy LeBeau AKA Gambit, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch (Battkeship, John Carter). Thanks to X-Men: Days of Future Past, the aforementioned dirty spot on the X-Men franchise (along with most events from the first three movies) has been retconned and no longer canon allowing Reynolds, along with director Tim Miller to reimagine Deadpool as seen in recent trailers.
In a bid to further expand Fox's X-Men universe producer Lauren Shuler Donner and 22 Jump Street star Channing Tatum (pictued top) have been rallying to reimagine Gambit in his own solo movie, following Deadpools example.
Directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) and based on a script by Josh Zemuter and treatment by Chris Claremont, with Donner, Tatum, Reid Carolin and X-Men alum Simon Kinberg producing, the Gambit movie will reportedly begin filming this March in New Orleans, with a likely but as-of-yet early 2017 release date.
