While it has been known for some time that both Friday the 13th and Hellraiser are to be rebooted in the near future, stirrings in the underworld known as Hollywood also brings news that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween are being rebooted. With the exception of Hellraiser, these properties having only recently been rebooted under the watchful eye of Michael Bay are to get a second chance at a revival, after the recent reboots all garnered lacklustre reception from critics and fans. In addition to news of these reboots Hellraiser, Fridays the 13th are also set to get their own Television serials, which are rumored to be in development. The Texas Chainsaw prequel Leatherface (promo poster below) is due for release in 2016, while filming on the next Halloween entitled Halloween: Returns began last month.
To complete the set Freddy Krueger, made famous by actor Robert Englund (pictured top), is also set to return in a reboot of The Nightmare on Elm Street, which is reported to be written by The Walking Deads very own David Leslie Johnson, whom has also been working on The Conjuring: The Enfield Poltergeist and Something Wicked this Way Comes. Produced and distributed by New Line Cinema, there is thankfully no mention of Michael Bays involvement, either directly or indirectly with the project.
Could it be that we are heading for a 21st century revival of the 80's phenomenon known as the slasher movie. While in part it would be nice to see these franchises reimagined with a modest budget, talented cast and crew and with respect to the source material, the fact remains that these movies were born in very much the same way as all the best horror movies - on a shoe-string budget, against the clock and against the odd's.
