Today, 20th Century Fox officially gave the greenlight for the highly anticipated Independence Day sequel, which is to be directed once again by the first film's director, Ronald Emmerich. According to a recent report by Deadline, Independence Day 2 is expected to begin production starting in May, 2015. The film is also slated for a June 24th, 2016 release date.
Unfortunately Will Smith will not be reprising his role in the sequel, but Jeff Goldblum has expressed interest in returning to the franchise, so it's likely we'll see at least one familiar face when this film hits theaters.
