Science Fiction films have allowed audiences to expand their imaginations beyond what is found in the real world. This exciting aspect of Sci-Fi films has enthralled audiences for decades. However, this genre can be quite overwhelming for newcomers who might need to learn what to expect. This article aims to guide newcomers to the genre with a curated list of Sci-Fi films that are easy to digest.

Ghostbusters (1984)

Before looking at sci-fi films, we must first pay homage to Ghostbusters, a film that effortlessly bridges the gap between the genre and mainstream entertainment. Released in 1984 and directed by Ivan Reitman, Ghostbusters is a supernatural comedy that sees four men fighting to keep a city free from supernatural entities. It stars Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, the late Harold Ramin, Sigourney Weaver, and Ernie Hudson. It has been popular for nearly 40 years and even spawned countless novelty items such as apparel and toys, as well as themed casino slots. But what is it about this franchise that features the iconic Pillsbury Man in enemy mode?

The film’s global appeal is not only limited to its engaging storyline and memorable characters but also the fact that it was something completely new. The film’s clever combination of comedy and supernatural resonated with audiences all over the world, making it an instant cultural icon.

The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

E.T. is one of the most iconic films in existence. For over four decades, this film has resonated with audiences young and old. Steven Spielberg’s classic sci-fi is heartwarming and timeless, featuring characters who will melt your heart, including the titular character. The story follows Elliot (Henry Thomas), who befriends a stranded alien and helps him avoid capture by the American government — for obvious reasons. E.T. is a classic tale about friendship and loyalty and how far someone would go to protect those closest to them, regardless of the being they might be. In the end, you are left feeling inspired by this film and its events.

The Martian (2015)

This is one of the few modern sci-fi films that is easy to understand, yet the storyline is entertaining and complex, as compared to others in the 2010s. Directed by Ridley Scott and based on the novel by Andy Weir, The Martian follows an astronaut who is stranded on Mars. Said astronaut is played by Matt Damon, who completely knocked this role out of the park.

Damon’s performance provides you with an inside guide into how lonely space exploration can be while simultaneously showing you how exciting it can be. What The Martian does well is balance its scientific elements with humor and optimism, and frankly, if you are stuck on a planet by yourself, this is exactly what you would need to survive.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Contrary to popular belief, the 70s and 80s were filled with wonderful sci-fi films still enjoyed today. We consistently see new fans join the fandom, and Hollywood executives try to replicate the success of these films. It is often difficult to replicate the success of films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

While Rotten Tomatoes was not around in 1977, the film holds an impressive 94% rating on the platform. Clearly, Steven Spielberg knew what he was doing when he decided to create sci-fi films! The storyline sees aliens slowly make their presence known while the government denies their existence. A classic trope, but it is one brilliant film!

Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope (1977)

The first film in the original trilogy kicked off the biggest sci-fi franchise on the planet. Even if you are not a part of the Star Wars fandom, you know a thing or two about the franchise; that’s how massive it is. As a beginner in the sci-fi film realm, no binge-watch session will be complete without a Star Wars film. The Galaxy Far, Far Away, created by George Lucas, is a space opera filled with action, love, betrayal, loyalty, and one iconic fight for galactic freedom. The fight between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire will see you come to love iconic characters.

Back to the Future (1985)

Michael J. Fox rose to stardom with this futuristic film. Not only does Back to the Future incorporate time travel, but this Robert Zemeckis film has elements of love, friendship, and loyalty too. Its underlying message is one of time exploration; however, the film teaches you a lot about allowing things to flow as they should. The film follows Marty McFly (Fox) as he navigates the past, present, and future with the help of the time-traveling DeLorean — a car still loved today. Back to the Future combines humor, science, and action to deliver a solid movie you will watch for years to come.

What Will You Be Watching First?

As you navigate the world of sci-fi, Ghostbusters stands out as an iconic film that demonstrates how sci-fi films can be marketed globally to become ingrained in popular culture. From themed casino slot machines to merchandise, Ghostbusters’ impact extends far beyond its theatrical release. For those who are only just embarking on this sci-fi journey, watch E.T for its lessons on loyalty, The Martian for its message on resilience, Close Encounters of a Third Kind for its exploration of alien-human interaction, Star Wars to encounter a global franchise on steroids, and Back to the Future for the lesson on allowing things to happen as they should.
