If there is one video game franchise just begging to be adapted to the big screen it must be the Metal Gear games. Developed, designed and directed by Hideo Kojima, the Metal Gear franchise has, for the most part, been a triumph of both groundbreaking gameplay and breathtaking cinematography. Granted, there have been moments when the narrative has deviated towards the fantastic, but on the whole the Metal Gear franchise is a guilty pleasure and a legendary video game franchise. Adapting it for the big screen however has been a long, war hardened road which currently stands to be distributed by Sony and Columbia Pictures, written by Jay Basu and directed by Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. How long we will have to wait for a Metal Gear movie remains to be seen, but fans only have to wait a week for the release of the next, and reportedly last instalment in the franchise - The Phantom Pain...
Allegedly, Metal Gear Solid V - The Phantom Pain marks creator Hideo Kojima's last game for Japanese developer/publisher Konami. Kojima promises that he has designed, developed and directed the definitive Metal Gear game for fans of the franchise as some reports claim that his company Kojima Productions and Konami will part ways in December, yet Konami ascertain that the future of the franchise WILL continue, and with Kojima's involvement. Rumors suggest that should Kojima leave the world of video games behind, it will likely be to pursue a career as a movie director; unsurprising considering Kojimas love for movies and the heavy cinematic presence within the Metal Gear franchise. With such widely conflicting claims we can only wait and see what the future holds for Metal Gear and its creator, but in the meantime we can enjoy what is promised to be one of the best video game experiences ever developed - if it lives up to the hype.
Metal Gear Solid V - The Phantom Pain will be released September 1st, 2015 for PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3 and Playstation 4.
