Screenwriter David S Goyer has enjoyed many successes in his career, penning screenplays and scripts for successful movies such as Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Trilogy, the Blade trilogy and Dark City. Unfortunately, he has also written some less favorable movies such as Unborn, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Jumper and Crow II: City of Angels.

Yet with his most recent, inflammatory comments, courtesy of CBR, one gets a feeling that Goyer is about to become very unpopular with fan communites, more so maybe than 2012's most wanted Damon Lindelof. Let us know what you think of the screenwriters comments!

"you’re dealing with an incredibly vocal but incredibly tiny sort of group. That’s a mistake that I think a lot of sometimes networks and movie studios make is sort of listening too much to them. I mean, it’s important to listen to the fan chatter but you’re really talking about a tiny, tiny, tiny portion of your audience that may not be representative of what your mainstream audience actually thinks or feels."

"I’m paraphrasing Steve Jobs, it’s like you don’t give the audience or the consumer what they want, you give them what they don’t even know they want. I mean, being involved in some of these comic book movies and stuff like that, people say, well, this is what they should do. And trust me, if we had just done exactly that I don’t think the audiences would have been completely happy. I mean that’s not to say that filmmakers can’t misfire, but if you try to just do what you think the fan community wants you’ll drive yourself crazy and you won’t actually write anything."

There you have it! We are the vocal minority and as such our opinion, to Goyer at least, means diddly squat and should be ignored. Though some of his points have warrant, his attitude towards fan communities, whom have contributed to most of the money he has earnt, is quite frankly and honestly disrespectful.

What do you guys think of Goyers comments?

I sort of agree with him in a way, not completely though. I do agree there are some very odd fans that would have some extremely peculiar and unreasonable wishes. However, I think he forgets that fact that most fans just really like the character and want to see them portrayed properly.

So basically, "f*ck the fans, it's all for money". Sounds about right. He leaves out the fact that this "tiny tiny group" aids the film marketing substantially by both partaking in social media and word of mouth. The fans are the heart of the franchises these studios buy in to. Without the fans, there would be no audience for these types of movies, especially the comic book ones.

I think we all know how Batman vs. Superman will turn out with this kind of mentality. Goyer's a complete idiot if he truly believes that. Watch Batman vs. Superman make a ton of money, but flop so hard with the fans that the negative rouse it gives way to, diminishes any profitablitiy any sequel might hold.

The fans are the life blood to these kinds of films, they're the ones who will pay the extra $$$ for a director's cut BluRay, they're the ones who will pay to see the film on opening night at 12am, they're the ones who will buy in to the product marketing and buy all the shirts, toys and posters. Goyer needs a reality check, or he'll quickly become one of the most hated writers in Hollywood, and I'm not even a big superhero movie fan. I'm more of a casual fan in that department, but I know that if Gareth Edwards had this attitude about Godzilla, the last 5 months would not have been so positive for WB or Legendary.

Thank God the movies I look forward to have passionate writers and directors who appreciate their fan bases (Godzilla, Pacific Rim, Prometheus, etc...). And PS. at least Damon Lindelof was a fan and tried to make the film more meaningful for the fanbase. He never would've said "f*ck the fans".

I just lost all interest in this one though, cause of Goyer's narrow minded comments.

I don't see anything in there that is directly disrespectful. Quite frankly, I agree with him to some extent.

In the case of The Dark Knight movies and (as far as we can tell) Godzilla, it's less about listening to fan communities and simply finding the right people for the job to respect material that fan communities love so much.

Goyer isn't saying that fan communities are small, he's saying that there's a very vocal minority in these communities that tend to get the attention of studios more than they should. He's right. You can't expect to go to two or three online forums of a specific franchise and allow the mentalities of those places affect a multi-million dollar project. Fans of the material support it the most, but it's people outside of the fandom that these films attract that make these movies' money.

It comes of as inflammatory, but I can understand this sentiment. If you work to strictly appease the fans or give in to their ideas, you typically get a really bad and expensive fan fiction come to life.

GMAN pretty much summed it up for me.

True, I suppose Goyer has a point regarding those odd memberss among us. And some of them are indeed quite strange and vocal (not to mention nonsensical-ever tried to read some of their "fan fiction"...oh man). But I have a problem if Goyer wants to tar all fans with the same brush, because clearly there is a danger of that. I think most fans want their movie to work well, not just for themselves as fans but also be able to stand up as a movie in its own right. He shouldn't confuse a rabid minority for the whole fanbase.

I mean, take Trekkies for example. Most people have an impression of them as those weirdos who dress around in self-made starfleet uniforms and talk klingon to strangers. But most Trek fans are perfectly normal folks out there.
