Seemingly appearing out of nowhere 10 Cloverfield Lane has surprised movie audiences, as it is rumored to be a sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams 2008 monster movie Cloverfield that has reportedly been developed in secret.
Update: Originally leaked online, Paramount Pictures have now officially released the first trailer below...
Here's the official plot synopsis...
After a car accident, a young woman comes to in an underground cellar, where most of the action takes place. She fears she has been abducted by a survivalist, who tells her he saved her life and that a chemical attack has left the outside world uninhabitable. Uncertain what to believe, she decides she must escape, whatever dangers she may face outside.
Produced by J.J. Abrams, directed by Dan Trachtenberg and written by newcomers Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken along with Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, also director), 10 Cloverfield Lane stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Thing 2011), John Gallagher Jr. (Jonah Hex) and the legendary John Goodman, and will be released in US theares March 11th 2016.

In all honesty, if the reports that this is a sequel to Cloverfield developed in secret are true it really comes as no surprise considering the worlds media attention has been focusing on Abrams more high profile Star Wars movie. From watching the "leaked" trailer I get two impressions, or more correctly I am reminded of two other movies - Gareth Edwards' Monsters (2010) and The Divide (2012).
Seeing these three characters in the bunker suggest to me, in line with the movies synopsis above that the creature we saw in the original is either still around, has bred or has attracted others and the US Government have "allegedly" responded with chemical attacks, a la Monsters.
The Divide however was a darker movie starring Michael Biehn in a similar role to Goodman. A dark and disturbing film, The Divide ended with its protagonist, portrayed by Lauren German, escaping the bunker to the outside world, a world so devastated and obliterated I half expected a Terminator to be prowling the charred landscape. Ultimately though, The Divide was a dissapointment personally, commercially and critically.
Hopefully 10 Cloverfield Lane has more to offer!
