Star Wars Episode 8 will still feature scenes involving Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Prior to her extremely  unfortunate death, Fisher had already completed filming her scenes for the next episodic Stars Wars entry, the currently untitled Stars Wars Episode VIII.

The fate of her character in Star Wars remains a mystery, however. As far as we know, reshoots for Episode 8 to reflect the current circumstances are extremely unlikely which means it will be up to Episode 9 to determine what becomes of our beloved Leia. Will she be re-cast, given an end off-screen or rendered through CGI? Obviously, it's too soon to tell. But as we learn more we'll be sure to keep you posted.

I know Rogue One showed us it's possible to recreate dead actors with CG, but recreating Peter Cushing when he's been dead for over a decade didn't really have the pull of potentially recreating a recently deceased actor or actress.

It just seems like bad taste to do it so early, but no one else could really fill the shoes of Carrie Fisher.

They're definitely in a hard spot characterwise, not sure what I want from them as I don't think it's likely Leia was ever meant to be killed off. It seemed like she was set up to be the next Mon Mothma.

Agreed, although I don't see the difference between recreating a deceased character using CG who's been dead for a while vs. recently. Does doing so act as homage to their legacy? Personally that's how I view it. I loved seeing the recreations in Rogue One, it made the film feel so real and so "right" for where it's set and [SPOILER]

Seeing CGI Leia in Rogue One after hearing of Fisher's death made me appreciate it even more. So, I have no issue if they CGI Leia in Episode 9. I would rather that than have her legacy ended off-screen in some verbal recollection.
