Captain America: The Winter Soldier started life as an inevitable sequel to a surprisingly good rendition of a, somewhat tired, superhero's origin story. Captain America has always suffered the same stigma that has cursed DC's Superman; the big boy scout, the goody two-shoes. Although 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger was a good film, it was limited by a storyline that was too familar to fans and of no consequence to general movie goers.
But that is something that the Winter Soldier does not suffer from. Having seen Chris Evans stand toe-to-toe alongside Robert Downey Jr.s charismatic Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth's Shakespearean Thor and Samuel L. Jackson's moody Nick Fury, the character stepped out from the burdens of the obligatory origin story into an ensemble team in the need of moral leader. Now in the Winter Soldier the character is taken out of his comfort zone of fighting neo-nazi's and alien invaders, and is thrust into a modern/futuristic political thriller - something which is bound to be a struggle for an icon of and from World War II. With the possible depth such a story affords it is no surprise that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is highly praised, and on course to be the superhero movie of the year.
