John Boyega, known for his role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens has officially signed up for a role in the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel (currently dubbed Maelstrom)!
According to Deadline, he'll be playing the son of Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba in the previous film.
Posting to Twitter just moments ago, Boyega wrote:
I'll be taking on the Pacific Rim franchise with Steven S.Deknight directing. Very excited!
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox,” said producer Guillermo del Toro, “The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Boyega is the first officially announced casting addition to the highly anticipated Pacific Rim 2, which begins production this fall. The sequel will be directed by Steven S.Deknight and is said to explore more of the Kaiju origins as well as introduce us to a world where Jaegers are Earth's primary defense. Other iconic characters from the first Pacific Rim are expected to return, but no official word on their involvement has yet been released.

Steven S. DeKnight is set to direct Legendary's PACIFIC RIM 2 (Pacific Rim Uprising), the follow-up to the epic action-adventure Guillermo del Toro created with 2013's hit original film, with a script penned by Zak Penn, Jon Spaights and del Toro. The producers are Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share will executive produce. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D.
Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, Pacific Rim Uprising's release date is March 23rd, 2018.
