One of the most enjoyable aspects of the 1996 original Independence Day, aside from the alien versus human dog fight above Los Angeles, was the dynamics in the relationships between the characters. Characters that obviously cared for and respected each other, but weren't scripted nor acted as though they lived a perfect, idyllic life, but were instead portrayed more realistically, warts et al. One such relationship was the father-son relationship between son David Levinson, portrayed by science fction regular Jeff Goldblum and his on screen father Julius Levinson, portrayed by Judd Hirsch; their strained, sardonic banter reminding many a son and many a father the frustration and tenseness usually felt in such a relationship that survives into adulthood. It is good news then that in addition to Jeff Goldblum returning for the sequel, that Julius 'Vultures' Levinson will also be returning, thanks to a recent announcement on Twitter from director Roland Emmerich that Judd Hirsch will return for the role. Emmerich has also tweeted confirmation that Bill Pulman will also be returning as (former) US President Thomas J. Whitmore. Now lets hope that Margaret Colin also returns as Constance Spano; Davids wife and Whitmores (former) communications director.
