Last fall Ben Affleck's casting as Bruce Wayne/Batman caused a media storm and a very public outrage, yet when the first black and white image was released of 'Batfleck' in full costume alongside the all-new batmobile the army of haters quickly did an about turn and proclaimed the Argo director as the best big screen incarnation of the caped crusader. While one could argue this is a perfect example of the fickleness of fans, one has to remember that from a fans point of view they had only 2003's notorious Daredevil as reference. The fans did not have Batman v Superman director Zack Snyders vision of what was to come, and the fans also did not have the knowledge that Ben Affleck, a great lover of comic books since his youth, holds Batman as his most reverred and favorite character, so much so that in all likelyhood Affleck has likely been educating Synder on the dark knight, his motivations, and his boundaries througt filming. Combining Snyders vision to bring a, somewhat loose, adaptation of The Dark Knight returns to the big screen, with Afflecks love and devotion to a role he has idolised since his childhood is why when we see the photos and the trailers that we realise that next March will become part of cinematic history.
In the latest issue of EW the star of Gone Girl spoke about the movie, why he accepted the role and his aspirations for the future of the role; dropping possible hints, as was rumored recently, to the possibility that he will direct as well as star in the caped crusdaders stand-alone DCCU movie, The Batman.
"My first reaction was, ‘Are you sure?’ At the time I was 40, 41, and had just finished Argo, and I felt like ‘This seems like a strange way to get to Batman.’ But Zack convinced me."
“He’s on the verge of being swallowed up by the anger and the rage that we see haunt this character in the other manifestations of it. But this guy is further down the line and has become more embittered and cynical.”
"He really keeps up the image of the playboy, actively. So you have more of a dichotomy which I thought was really fun, and a little sad, like the aging playboy."
"I thought if I was going to direct a movie like this, which I would like to do at some point, I need to have something of a refresher course of how these movies are done."
