Following the rumors we caught wind of last week, it appears 20th Century Fox are indeed launching a 7 episode digital mini series based in the Alien universe! Like their recent mobile game Alien: Blackout, this new series will be focusing on the Amanda Ripley character and will have ties to Creative Assembly's Alien: Isolation game. The series will kick off tomorrow via IGN and official Fox channels:

It’s been fifteen years since Amanda Ripley’s mother disappeared aboard the deep space towing ship Nostromo. And for fifteen years, Amanda has suspected there was more to her mother’s story than meets the eye.

In this new digital series reimagining a familiar and fan-favorite story, 20th Century Fox has expanded on Alien: Isolation by taking the cut scenes from the 2014 game and adding in new story beats to bring the tale of Amanda Ripley to life in a whole new way.

Be sure to keep it locked to this site and our forums for the latest fan discussions on all things Alien!

Yawn ... they expand the cut-scene and they have a new series?

Maybe it will work, I am not sure. My only complaint about it is that why have another Ripley? Is it so difficult for them to come up with new characters? Sure the characters in the prequels were mostly lame but at least they tried something new.

I guess for some its better than nothing, and it may come across as a slightly more Polished/Higher Resolution set of extended Alien Isolation Cut Scenes, but i think it would please those who wanted more about Amanda Ripley, but some may be disappointed we are not having a LIVE Action TV Series instead.

That would be a Financial Risk, and would Limit how much Xenomorph related Scenes you have due to Special Effects, and on a Budget could risk having more Weaker CGI than we saw in Alien Covenant.

And as Thoughts_Dreams pointed out, eventually we have to concentrate more on the Ripley Saga... be it CGI TV Series, Live Action or a Movie..  And likewise how many times can we see Xenomorph, Egg, Face Hugger and Queens?

The Xenomorph Aspect is something that would cost quite a lot of Money unless its shown to lesser degree than even in ALIEN... because depending on Budget you could end up with CGI that sits between Alien 3 and Alien Covenant, and Practical Xenomorphs that could look more like AVPR!

To do the Monster Justice would require a Good Special Effects Budget, but then its about Finding the Right Plot and then Characters, and i am not sure that bringing out a Alien Isolation or Aliens like Repeating Plot/Tropes would be something they can continue to do over and over and make a Good Return on a Expensive Budget.

So i guess this is WHY a CGI Animated Series is less of a risk, but it could be the way to go for Disney, even though it could relegate the Franchise to more like what the Starship Troopers is NOW like.

There potentially is more to the Franchise in light of the Prequels, than Humans and Marine Types pitted against Swarms of Alien Organisms, even if they come in slightly different variations....  To continue with such a path would make the Franchise a Starship Troopers with Xenomorphs!

With the Background to the Franchise, Ripley's and Xenomorphs are just a smaller % of what else they could cover, the Franchise has hinted/teased as Humanity wishing to make New Starts on New Worlds, Genetic Manipulation, Creation of AI beings, that could want their own World/Life, the conflict between Weyland and Yutani, Space Exploration, the Colonial Marines and conflicts with Rogue Factions, AWOL AI, and what other Bug Hunts (Dangerous Life-Forms) they have encountered.

There is a slight indication of other Alien Races after ALIEN, for instance the Arcturian Poontang and so who are the Arcturians?

Thats before we even touch upon the SCOPE that Prometheus had opened up.... The Engineers, not only their Society/History or the Horrific Creations the $%£%^$ had been creating on LV-223 and other Installations.

The Who Created them, Who else have they Created Plot, is kind of Limitless as far as Worlds, Species and Conflicts...

But the Bottom Line is the Curse/Shackles that ANY Franchise movie has to be about Ripley and Xenomorphs and a majority would expect any Franchise Movie, TV Show or Spin Off would have to cover ONE of those aspects.

So as Ignorant Guy points out.... this could mean the Franchise could just become YAWN!

I was hoping for a television series that would explore a new storyline. However, I will watch it tomorrow. Maybe it is interesting enough so I will play Alien Isolation. I haven't played it before...

The series was not that great, the editing was bad (fox logo blinking in and out during an episode, what was that about?) and the lip sync was awful (the game was mostly 1st person and the limitations of the game engine were hidden). On the bright side they used cues from both Goldsmith and Kurzel ...

If the quality is indicative of the financial status of Fox, I'm sorry for them.

123Engineer The IGN series looks pretty good so far- but I agree. I have a feeling something bigger is coming.

You should play Isolation. It is a masterpiece.

ignorantGuy Some of the lip sync was indeed terrible while other animations were better than the game. In other words, uneven. However, taking it all in as a whole and how the narrative is done, I think it is pretty good over all and sets up a nice story and setup for something we have yet to see.

Had a Quick Flick through the Videos... and they do seem like the Cut Scenes, merged with some New Scenes that are just a bit more polished than the In-Game Scenes and yes there is some pretty BAD Lip Sync issues.

I have to go and watch them in full, I do think a bit more Polish and Quality like say the Starship Troopers then such TV Shorts/Movies could work for Disney...  They would be like Glorified Comics... but would for many FALL short of a Live Action Series or Movie..

But would be more Cost Effective.
