So I finally saw the 1998 film...

...and I really don't need to say anything, because it's already been said by somebody somewhere else and likely a lot better than I could say it.

But here are a couple of things that did stick out to me in my immediate memory, and I'll probably come back and fill this up the more I think about it:

Elsie Chapman said Allosaurus died out in the Cretaceous. It was the Jurassic, you moron! And you're supposed to be a paleontologist?!

Who's idea was it to have it be constantly raining almost all throughout the film? It makes the stuff we get in the climax of KOTM look like a light drizzle in comparison.

It's like the movie can't decide if it wants to take Godzilla seriously or if it wants to be all campy and goofy about it. For instance, Animal's encounter with Zilla when he almost steps on him.

The constant mispronunciation of Nick's last name got really old really fast.

As somebody on the Autism spectrum, Victor's wife calling him the R-word during Zilla's first attack really rubbed me the wrong way. There are few things in this world that I really, truly hate. The R-word, and more specifically its most common application, is one of them. I know it's probably minor in the grand scheme of things, but it's still something that I really don't like.

Honestly, this film has given me a whole new appreciation for both the animated series that followed this movie and the MonsterVerse. I already liked 2014 and KOTM, but they look like masterpieces to me now in comparison to this.

However, there were a few things that I came away liking. I really liked all three chase scenes in the movie (the helicopter chase, the sub chase, and the taxi chase). I thought those were pretty decent action scenes. I like Zilla's roars. David Arnold's music is great, and definitely one of my favorite tracks in the series. I liked the opening scene of the Japanese fishing boat attack, and it's probably the most Godzilla-feeling scene in the entire movie. I thought Hicks was okay. But that's all really the best I can say about this thing.

Now if you excuse me, I'm gonna go watch Godzilla: The Series to wash this outta my brain.

If memory serves, I think CGI worked best in dark rainy environments like JP back then. Dry daylight seemed to show flaws. I could be wrong, but that is what I read and noticed about movies from that era.

Most hate the movie, but I thought it was a decent popcorn flick and it's nice you gave it a chance.

Rain and night settings are used to hide CG flaws to this day. It was the same in the mid-1990s. Though Jurassic Park still had excellent daytime CG and visual effects that looked far more convincing than this abortion.

That said, since I have no real love for the film, I'll go the opposite direction and dig out something nice to say about it for a change.

I think the first act of the film is pretty solid. Everything before the setting switches to New York has some very dramatic and clever build-up, from the terror in the Japanese' fisherman's, "Gojira" to the dramatic reveal of Nick standing in the footprint, the movie was setting the stage for a terrifying force to come crashing on these characters. Unfortunately that power and terror never came and the first act's build-up feels more like red herring as a result.

I...actually liked this movie. More in a funny way than anything, but I do enjoy this thing. I remember when I'd annoy my dad by watching it back-to-back XD

i've officially left. thanks for the memories!

I don't remember much about it. I saw it on Syfy when I was little and it was actually my FIRST Godzilla movie.

Ah shit I’m using my wrong eye again. Sorry that was meant to be behind your back

I think the film is pretty good up until the Godzilla reveal, and you actually spent enough time with the characters to be tired of them.

If they had called it ANYTHING else other than Godzilla, it would have made for a rather entertaining Kaiju film. The problem is they used the Godzilla moniker - which immediately set the film up on specific expectations with audiences and fans alike.

It would have made a much better Cloverfield entry, imo.

Hyped for: Alien: Romulus | Badlands (Predator 6) | Cloverfield 4

Chris It actually wasn't even that that bugged me. It was the characters that really got under my skin the most, which is highly unusual for a movie. At least for me. I don't know what it was, exactly.
