New Development

"In the videogame realm, the Alien franchise has had more than a few ups and downs in recent years, from the groan-worthy disappointment of Aliens: Colonial Marines to the outright terror of Alien: Isolation.

While the future of the cinematic franchise is in a bit of doubt following the tepid performance of Alien Covenant, 20th Century Fox is evidently keen to keep pressing into new corners of that universe in videogames. It's certainly willing to spend decent money on the exercise: the studio recently purchased a firm called Cold Iron, a games company set up by former developers at Cryptic.

Cold Iron's first bit of business under Fox's ownership will be to create a shooter based on the Alien franchise - a game designed to "explore areas of the universe that fans haven't gotten to experience".

It's worth pointing out that this will be the first Alien game to be overseen by Fox - previous games, Colonial Marines and Isolation, were published by Sega and handled by Gearbox Software and Creative Assembly. It's too early to say what Cold Iron's planning at this early stage, though according to Eurogamer, the studio's designers have form in the shooter genre: personnel there have previously worked on such hits as Doom, Bioshock Infinite and Metroid Prime 3. All of those games were, in their own individual ways, dark, intense and sci-fi themed.

What seems like a bit of a pity is that, for the immediate future at least, Creative Assembly won't be getting a shot at making a further game in the franchise. Although it had its flaws, Alien Isolation was a bold, superbly-made survival experience, and made with an obvious affection for the Alien franchise. That the game didn't sell as expected has, it seems, put Creative Assembly out of the running for the time being.

Here's hoping Fox doesn't learn the wrong things from Isolation's slow sales, and commission some kind of ultra-violent bug hunt with little in the way of that earlier game's creeping dread.

More on this as we get it." (Source)

Looking forward to it.

Great points. Sounds like it will have Engineers etc. but also sounds like its going to be a bug hunt :o /

They were too worried about CA's Isolation not selling as well. It was a fantastic game but survival horror generally doesn't go platinum. Hopefully they could make another Isolation type but give more action or at least an option to play that way if desired.

I think the expanded universe opens up a great amount of scope for a Game, i hope its not to much of a Shooter based Game, especially if its about Eggs, Face Huggers and Xenomorphs and Queens...  how limited its that? EXTREMELY a shooter can be fun and all that, but with limited baddies it would get repetitive.   EGGS, FACE HUGGERS,  CHEST BURSTERS, XENOMORPHS and QUEEN where the Eggs will release Face Huggers that will try and escape being shot, while also looking for the opportunity to Face Hug the Player, Chest Bursters attempting to escape the Player, and the Xenomorphs running up and killing the player, are very limited if its in context to a pure SHOOT-EM-UP

A good Plot/Story and Narrative can make a big difference, which is why Isolation worked, i think a Survival Horror Shoot-em-up is better, if we look at the Resident Evil Franchise and imagine if these games were done in the context of a Doom, were you just go around shooting hordes of Zombies etc it would be limited, but fun for a while.

The expanded universe allows us to discover the Black Goo and various Spawning Horrors, if they introduce Synthetics as a enemy too, corrupt Humans and then Engineers i think with a well written kind of Survival Horror Story i think would make a very interesting game.

Another Alien Colonial Marines, or even AVP game minus Predators would not be something NEW

Imagine they (which they won't) made a free roaming game where you could take a cruiser to other moons and investigate some Engineer mystery for the Company while encountering various forms of xenomorphs alone the way??

MemberDeaconJan-18-2018 9:54 AM

I think it depends on Budget and Detail, but thats a nice idea....

I think provided they work close with RS/FOX as far as the Plans for Alien Covenant Sequels... so as to not contradict anything thats planned...

Then a Survival Horror Type Shooter, where the Company sends a Mission to Planet 4 in the aftermath of Alien Covenant, would be a EPIC kind of Game if its done right with a Good Cinematic Story.

Imagine if the Ship was a Smaller ship like the Nostromo and it had been affected in the Storm and needed repairs, and then we have a crew of what 8-12 where some stay behind, while some go off exploring (includes the players Character).

This allows us to explore the Juggernaught, the Old City and those Dead Engineers, have someone infected with a Neomorph...  Stumble on Davids Workshop and Xenomorphs.  Have someone use the Black Goo Ampoules....

Recover Walter......

Then the Climax.... reveal hidden Synthetic and Agenda like ASH, and then returning Engineers.

I enjoyed Isolation very much. I think history will repeat itself though- like Isolation and the movies, it will not likely appeal to the masses no matter how good it is because the masses want super heroes and explosions.

Bigdave you should pitch that idea! It's great

BigDave - Your idea should be used in a spin-off movie.

If we take a look at this map that Ingeniero provided on one of their threads, and we assume its accurate

It shows the Potential for Locations within such a Game, i have added a Circle where the Neomorph Attacks happened, and thus where the body of Hallett and Ankor will be located.  So a Video Game mission to Planet 4 would allow for the discovery/exploration of a number of things.

*Lander Crash Site: Not much evidence to be gained, maybe the bodies of Karine, and Ledwood would be in no good condition to figure whats happened, and Farris no doubt would be severely burnt.

*Neomorph Attack Zone: Where the remains of Hallett and Ankor are located.

*Juggernaught Ship: Where a number of clues remains and Neomorph Spores.

*Stream/River just before the passage to the Juggernaught: The location of the Spores that infected Ledwood, but more Spores could be located at various areas near River/Streams.

*The Inner Engineer City: Where we would have the location of many Dead Bombarded Engineers.

*The Hanger/Docking Bay: What is left to discover here? Any Engineer Ships?

*The Crashed Docking Ship: Another place to explore, what condition are the Dead Engineers in here?

*The Cathedral Building: Again maybe one of the Main Locations, where Davids Workshop (some Black Goo)  and Experiments are located, the Dead Bodies of Rosenthal, Cole and Oram including the Egg Chamber with plenty of Eggs remaining.  Plus likely Walters Body (depending on his condition).

*Other City Buildings: What clues/horrors remain here, was their temporary shelter from the Bombardment in any of these buildings?

*Vast Mountains, Forest and Open Plains: For locations, where the Gamer could be hunted by Xenomorphs/Neomorphs.

*Missing Neomorph: We only saw the death of one, so where is the other? How long do them live and what happens when they Die?

The other Questions Remaining is what became of the Xenomorph/Neomorph Bodies are their remains, do they decompose?  Ridley Scott Teased the Xenomorph would Regenerate, which sounds silly, but maybe not if from the remains, they break down and small Egg Spores grow.

So there is certainly a lot of areas to explore....

A game could have the crew split into groups, one group remains at the Landing Site, and a lot depends where this site is located.... do they land close to the Covenant Lander Wreckage? Closer to the City?

While another TWO Group go off to different areas.... The Player taking control of a character within one of these exploring groups who go to one location, are maybe then called for help by those at the Landing Site or other Party Exploring the different area... which when the Player arrives he discovers they have been infected etc...

The Game could offer TWO alternative Characters to select, one a Female and one a Male, like the Original Resident Evil Game, and each Character belongs to a different exploration party.  So if you choose Character A you head off to explore the Juggernaught First, get a SOS to help the other Party, or arrive where they are latter (The Cathedral)  while if you choose Character B you are off to the City/Cathedral first, maybe you arrive latter at the Juggernaught or witness survivors of this Party running to your location, with Neomorph in pursuit.

If you are Character A, then by the time you reach the Cathedral, you will discover a few of that Party have been infected with Face Huggers, maybe discover the Bodies and Witness Chest Burster.

If you are Character B maybe you discover Orams body and the Egg Cave, see some get Face Hugged and attempt to leave the Cathedral at which point you run into Character A running of from a Neomorph.

So yes a kind of Survival Horror Game could work very well.

*Missing Neomorph: We only saw the death of one, so where is the other? How long do them live and what happens when they Die?

Both of them were shot dead, one youngster in the grass field and the second one in the Cathedral.

BigDave Yep- The two character RE style is a fantastic idea. It is like getting two games in one- actually four since there were two scenarios for each character (I played RE 2 more than I care to admit). With today's technology, it seems you could play as more characters and the things you do or don't do affect the over all game outcome. Those survival horror games usually had different endings and paths too. Additionally, some things you did or items you took could affect the next scenario. The challenge would be getting enough interest so that the company with the purse strings would authorize the development.

@daliens

Indeed i have only seen the movie 4 times so have not studied it in depth like Prometheus, i do recall the first Neomorph being shot a few times and then running off, maybe it died from its injuries? I will have to re-watch and pay more attention.

I guess if they both survived then we have to ask why did the other not go to the Cathedral too?

There are rumors the movie had planned to have a (and some rumors even had) Neomorph vs Xenomorph scene for the fate of the other Neomorph.. Which is exactly what happened in the Novel...

so maybe this added to my potential confusion regarding the fate of the other Neomorph.

Looking Logically at the movie, it would make more sense that the Neomorph that first attacked was indeed killed,  we still have to ask what happens to the Body, as far as what state would the remains be in should a Company Ship arrive years latter.

Then again we have to wonder what state the Human Bodys would be in too ;)

Indeed DK the way those earlier RE Games worked, but with more freedom/control and like in say Alien Isolation but with option to go between First Person and 3rd Person Perspective would be interesting.

I do worry the Game will be more of a basic AVP/Alien Colonial Marines type Action Shooter though, lets just hope there is more to KILL and be THREATENED by than Eggs, Face Huggers, Xenomorphs and Queens ;)

You're most welcome Ati.

The news was very coincidental because this past Christmas I bought this game and guide below (Metroid Prime 3) for my youngest and I to play and it was on the development list above from Cold Iron. They make great games.

I really like that idea Critters5. Investigate Engineer mystery and get slaughtered by a xenomorph along the way...bring it on.

That's wonderful BigDave.

Have a reunion and welcome Walter back on the craft as the Engineers show up very disappointed with the property damage on Planet 4. And all their family turned to black stone. The Engineers would certainly show aggression.

A climax with an Engineer return like you describe above would be amazing. The Engineer architecture, juggernauts...all of it riddled with dark areas ready to produce a surprise horror. It is kind of tough to choose 1st person or 3rd person shooter...Super Metroid is my favorite 3rd person, Metroid Prime is my favorite 1st person shooter. Either way could be great if done right.

Decomposition on Planet 4

As far as the decomposition on Planet 4 after David washed the planet with pathogen aerosol....good question but I can only assume there will be xenomorph type bacteria similar to what we have seen from Hallett (below) that would infect and consume/mutate the flesh.

Interesting as Polypoids to relate to Cnidarians the Source i had from 2015 did say the Xeno Origins was from a Parasite that had Cnidarian characteristics but more so Cystoidea (Echinoderms) and basically said they started as a Parasitical Worm that had was like some Cnidarian  (Sea Hydra) but also looked like a cross between Tadpoles a bit like Mosquito Larve only with Tentacled heads.  These could infect a Host to pass on DNA...  But they would also grow and then turn into like a Cystoid where there bodies grow into like round cocoon, with a tail and Tentacles, they called this Stage like a Testicle with Tentacles.  These could also infect a Host.

When no Hosts were around or the Environment was not suitable they would enter a state of Hibernation and attach to Surfaces with their Tentacles and Harden into a Cyst...  from this when a Host is around or Suitable Environment, inside the Cyst Stage the Organism either Clones its Adult Parasite Stage (a smaller Tentacled Testicle) or inside the Cyst it just clones itself into many more worm like Parasite Stages.

They hint the Xenomorph DNA chain came from contact with this Parasite with the Engineers Experiments. Kind of like the FLY movie where a Fly enters the Teleportation Device.  So they claimed early 2015 that was.

There are many components you cite above from 2015 that seem to be depicted in the post Alien: Covenant release Hallett image BigDave.

There are many things that I've noticed from the Dark Horse Alien and Prometheus comics that have made their way into the movie and now in parts of the "secret" concept work.

I hope a lot the concepts we saw in the comics make their way into the game.

So Fox is still alive? Disney didn't replace the lot?

I'd like to fly a Juggernaut!

And instead of being trapped on a Earth vessel...I'd rather be trapped on a orbiting derelict(Juggernaut) or a really large alien vessel.

Wonder if they have the rights to Giger's art?

I'd love to see Zombie Fifields. Zombie astronauts/cosmonauts are really cool.

MemberTrilobiteJan-19-2018 6:47 PM

Does FOX have control over the game that much now that Disney has the rights?

Ingeniero

MemberPraetorianJan-19-2018 8:44 PM

I would assume that they are referring to the 20th Century Fox studio dk...and that would mean yes on Disney having the rights.

MonsterZero asks a great question above regarding the rights to Giger's art. That sure would be a wonderful yes.

I think the studio behind the game would have had to have some back and forth conversation with the Project Idea, where it will be set and what it will be about at a time prior to the Disney Take Over.

I think maybe FOX can still operate under the Disney Brand, it does not mean no more FOX, just FOX will be a subsidiary to Disney, so Disney will have a lot of say, but it does not mean movies and games will be branded by Disney alone..   Well this is what i can assume.

Regarding to the HR Giger Rights, they would have to make a agreement with the Giger Estate, i am not 100% how much Giger Aesthetic they can or cant use.  I would assume any Juggernaught/Derelict any Xenomorph, Face Hugger or Egg would NOT need any permission from the Giger estate, but i think they have to in the credits, credit Original Design HR Giger.
