Prometheus - Why Was Holloway So Unpleasant?

'Although Prometheus has more than its fair share of antagonists and people of uncertain agendas, one of the least sympathetic characters is surely Elizabeth Shaw’s boyfriend, Holloway. After Shaw and her compatriots discover groundbreaking evidence of a dead civilization on LV-223, Holloway unaccountably descends into booze-soaked gloom.

Believe it or not, Holloway was even more unpleasant in an earlier cut of the film, where originally shot scenes showed him pouring scorn on Shaw’s excitement at their discoveries. Holloway, it seems, was hoping to make contact with living engineers, and when he doesn’t, he finds his frustration impossible to hide.  In pick-up shots filmed later on, a further argument between Holloway and Shaw is replaced with a toned-down sequence where Holloway's less bullish.

It’s not entirely clear why Holloway was written as such a reckless, petulant character, but we do now know that elements of this were in even the earliest drafts. Back when Prometheus was still an Alien prequel, Holloway would have been attacked by a facehugger after blithely taking off his space helmet in the Engineers’ lair – something the character still does in the finished film.'

Holloway had a shit script to work with and done what he could considering the acting level he is at. The whole rose scene, in fact that whole part. Then the way he is with david - we csnt say maybe robot is the new white , black , brownvto hate.... might just be culture. otherwise he got himself killed for nothing

Take This.... This is the blood of our lord

I pretty much thought Holloway was generally a dick. He deserved David's wrath but sort of redeemed himself by asking to be flamed by Vickers- but he deserved it.

Prometheus - why was everyone so unpleasant?

"He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!"

Forgettable,  yes. If only they wouldn't have been so annoying.

I think Holloway was just so disappointed that all of his work, for all of those years leads to this moment of finally meeting these would be Gods and getting some Answers, or at least some clues and it would have been the GREATEST Discovery of Mankind.

To find out that NO-ONE is Home, was disappointing to Holloway, i would also say drinking to wash away his sorrows/disappointment turned him into a Dick.... but then Drinking Alcohol can do that to a lot of people.

Its not hard to put it past any kind of Apartheid  to exist towards Androids in the Future, where they are seen as 2nd Class Citizens so to speak, the same way Replicants Felt Treated.  And so Mankind could act this way towards AI, and see them as insignificant and just basically a TOOL

I feel when Holloway Realized he wont meet our makers, and will have no answers to OUR creation, he turned his disappointment onto a attack on David, because David knows his Creator and Reason for Creation, David has his Answers... where as Holloway does not have his...

I believe that it all breaks down to an overabundance of starch in the scarf.

A remarkable and probably true idea!

Our first exchange was about flip-flops and scarfs Ati in the Holloway topic. I am still in awe of his pouting. I can pout and be selfish but he made me feel good about myself with that display.

I still believe there is a little mystery in the way he parsed his lips while entering the valley on LV-223. Lip parsing can make or break a scene and I think his parsing was perfectly timed and it added to the depth of embedded screens in the windows displaying patterns on the ground.

I would like to add respectfully that I believe this chap below wasn't unpleasant:

I suspect Holloway may have been an alcoholic, which was why he seemed quick to turn to drink. I also think he may have noticed David noticing Shaw, or tending to her more than the others and out of jealousy wanted to remind David he was a robot any chance he got.

I didn't mind Holloway, but maybe he was use to getting his own way as well. Or he was just a generally short tempered person.

He was probably written to be a POS. I did not feel anything when he died. Removing his helmet was effing stupid because you do not know if there is something unknown in the air that is dangerous. Being a professional he should have known better. That character sucks and by the way they should have figured out a way for him to die that would not have been that stupid even though it fits his crappy personality.

As a related thing, wasn't the Mohawk guy (Fifield) a bit of the same?

"Is that your thesis mister biology?"

"So we are here because of something that you kids found in a cave?"

I bet that these are not the exact quotes but you probably know what I mean if you have seen the movie. They have both to a point a personality that is a bit of "I know better than you". Do you agree with this? Nowhere in the movie do they show any kind of humility as far as I know but I haven't watched Prometheus for some months or so. It does not show a kind of person that is very humble to say the least if you ask me.

As a related thing did they not have a clip when he trains before the mission or something? In that clip he says something like "I am here to prove religion wrong", it sort of points to a personality that has a very big self-confidence like "I am right and you are wrong, ha ha".

They should have written him to be more of a sympathetic character. I believe that everyone have more or less of various character traits so some are very selfish, some less so, for example. Unfortunately he was too much of an arrogant asshole to get sympathy from me.

"It’s not entirely clear why Holloway was written as such a reckless, petulant character…"

I would like to know about that also, was it to have a character that the audience could focus their anger at so they could feel a bit better afterwards. I doubt that was the reason but I would like to know. Lindelof or Spaights are probably the persons to ask about that.

What a couple! A dick and a scientist that is naive as crap. They suck

Only David and Janek were well done in Prometheus the rest were either unlikable or forgettable.
