Alien Covenant loses Certified Fresh Batch on Rotten Tomatoes. Fair or Unfair?

"Alien Covenant" mixed reviews did not prevent the movie from originally getting a "certified fresh" stamp on the Rotten Tomatoes website. This certification is synonym of more less unanimous critical praise; however, it can be misleading, specially considering the average grade given by reviewers (e.g.: AC's avg grade is 6.4/10, while Prometheus' is 7/10). A movie gets a certified fresh status when it manages to achieve 75% of positive reviews. It doesn't matter if the movie score eventually drops a little, unless it is by more than by 5%; then, it loses its "certified fresh status". That just happened to "Alien Covenant", as its score slid below 70% for the first time since its release. The audience score remains at 57 % (rotten) But, what is the relevance of this, you might be wondering. On one hand, it shows the movie is not getting any new found love from critics to become one of those "misunderstood" gems some claimed the film was. On the other hand, the new stripped status is more telling of the divisive nature of this particular installment in the Alien franchise and its focus. To put things on perspective, "Prometheus" maintains (and never lost) its certified fresh status at 72% while 68% of the audience liked it.

Totally unfair! This is far from the greatest Alien franchise movie but it's a good one. I'd give it an 80%. It was the most entertaining movie I've seen in the cinemas in a long time. I am baffled by clusterfucks like The Force Awakens and The Avengers getting 90% while a much better film like Alien: Covenant can't even get a 70% from critics and is in the 50% from audiences. That's ridiculous. I guess the average moviegoer would rather see pointless after pointless superhero gangbangs and dead Star Wars films.

Alien Covenant is the best in the series, therefore it deserves about 90%; Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals is over 90%, and is just a bit better than Alien Covenant

Really doesn't matter to me.Just critical opinion. If i listen to to Rotten Tomatoes or any critic for that matter my life would be considerably emptier.I don't need useless sites like RT Metacritic etc to tell me where the film stands.I happen to love the film and that's what matters. The only opinion i care about is mine.

I have a good example set directly within this franchise.Alien 3 holds something like a 44% on RT so therefore that site would have us believe the film is beyond redemption. That's not the case with many a fan. While flawed manys have come to embrace 3 as a great film regardless of poor critical reception,I know i have.

I also find it worth noting this years other sci fi horror film LIFE holds a 67% on RT and that hasn't stopped the film from earning it's fare share of admirers.Alien Covenant still 2% better according to their scoring.Critics aren't everything.

Yea rotten tomatoes and especially Metacritic are trash. There are plenty of good or great movies with bad ratings. Moonlight was shit yet has a 99% rating on RT. Covenant was far superior yet it has this rating.

Well, fair. I mean, more and more we realize that the mass critical opinion should not really determine how one feels BEFORE sseeing a movie. So, it's fair that it dropped, but still unfortunate.

The movie deserved a little more love than it received and it's box-office failure and critical confusion/disdain may be affecting Scott's opportunities in the next one(s) and I am in the camp that enjoys that he is doing currently, so yeah.

I have seen it go both ways. I might love a movie that gets panned or hate a critically acclaimed one. The numbers can have some value I suppose. It is a crap shoot imo.

Totally bogus (online list of reviews).

I still feel like those telling me they didn't like Alien: Covenant are kidding. I see a gem competing with Prometheus.

I can tell you that there are very funny negative reviews on this forum.

red0guy wrote they wanted a NECA figure with a facehugger on Luke Scott...that is very funny. Very funny. The reviews on this site are legitimate because this group sifts through every detail, provides adequate analysis, and produces an opinion.

I believe you should all be thumbs up for Alien: Covenant!

If not, please feel free to detail the injury you sustained watching an Alien movie with a deep AI backstory.

Note: I also like the flute scene so have at it.

I would say its each to their own....

Alien Covenant has been a disappointment for a number of reasons but this does not prevent people from enjoying it.

Sadly for me i each viewing the movie kind of comes down a notch on how i score it, where as Prometheus i had a mixed view on but i grew to be more fond of it and my rating of it now is higher than when i first saw it.. i just cant say the same for Alien Covenant...  but thats not to say its a bad movie..  I prefer it much more than Alien Resurrection ;)

Honestly I am not the least bit surprised. If you have a movie with zero interest in the human characters maybe except for Oram, that is what you get.

I am not sure if it is misunderstood, I think it is fairly obvious that it sacrifices the human characters for androids and that it doesn't care about the humans compared to artificial intelligence. Another way to put it is this: the androids are not there as a part of the human story, the humans are there as a part of the AI story, which isn't of much interest to me.

They kind of get what they deserve.

To put it short: it is totally understandable that this is the way it develops for that movie (as far as its scores on Rotten Tomatoes is concerned).

Rick D mentions The Force Awakens, it is not a perfect movie and a lot of it has got to do with the lack of Luke IMO and also that Rey becomes a miss perfect. In no way is it as disappointing as Alien Covenant because it is about the humans mostly and not AI. Still it is better than the prequels by far.

50% is probably what I would give it (AC) at best.

Thoughts_Dreams that's how I feel about Rotten Tomatoes and other good film critics.

Since it is an aggregate site, that is what the score calculates to.  I was disappointed by the movie and many as well.  So that is a decent score regardless.  I know much better movies with lower scores.

Daliens: How do you mean? Do you try to say that they really don't matter? I guess that is what you are trying to say but I am not totally sure so therefore I ask.

Thoughts_Dreams I usually read the critics before I see the movie, some critics after I see the movie. They matter to some extent. I am old enough to decide for myself if I like a movie or not.
