Reason why Protomorph is so fleshy

Last weekend was the Comic Con in Berlin, and Conor O'Sullivan was there and held two panels. One on Saturday (Alien Covenant Q&A panel) and Sunday (special effects panel)

I was able to see the panel only on sunday, but he shared a lot of secrets. He showed a lot of never before seen pictures from Covenant & Prometheus. For example the mouthburster was a fully practical effect with a puppet for the actor with an embryonic sac which emerges from its host.

One after this workshop he admitted one question from the audience. The question came from one member of the German Colonial Marines Corps.

Marine: "The Xenomorph had a biomechanical look in the original and extremely fleshy in Covenant. Why did you change that?"

O'Sullivanv: "That's a good question. We asked Ridley the same during the making of the suits for the Protomorph. And Ridley told us that he always wanted the Alien to look more fleshy then biomechanical. After he saw Gigers drawings in the Necronomicon he took his drawings and sketched over them with his visual ideas. He showed us (the team) the sketches he made back then and said, I want that. And you always do what Ridley says. He wanted it from the beginning like that. It will be forever a secrect why Giger made it more Biomechanic during the producrion , but that's how Giger is. And when Ridley say you have to do it more fleshy then you do it. You always do what Ridley says."

And that was an answer which I never expected. I never thought that Ridley always wanted the Alien to be fleshy. That fact blew my mind. O'Sullivan even showed to me and the guy from the GCMC Ridley's original drawing from Alien what he changed and all that. We where amazed and honored to see it. He even showed us more making of pictures they may gonna post on their site, but still are confidential. So we wherent allowed to take pictures. Because maybe those concepts are coming in the next sequel.

To see the BtS pictures of the Back and Mouthburster was awesome. The backburster and mouthburster where completely made practical and except for the Neomorphs puppets they're done completely practical. There is no CGI involved, because they used the original takes from it.

And that's even more amazing.

And yes the signature in the picture is from Conor O'Sullivan

Interesting. My take away is that you do what RS says creature wise after HR gets into his head first.

It seems OK to me that the proto is fleshy in Covenant. Why should it be so biomecha in 2104?

Covenant takes place in 2104, Alien takes place in 2122.

18 years... David sees at the end of Covenant that the creature is not perfect. Probably he creates the biomecha version in the years to come.

I'm glad the Protomorph is so fleshy and the chestburster is different from the one in Alien 1979. This leaves room for more surprises in the next film.

"He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!"

I hope, we will saw the full biomehanical Alien in next movie. No more flesh aliens (excluding neomorphs - they good with flesh).
