art vs porn. Giger created a gray area but how do we deal with it here?

The Terms of use state this regarding offensiveness:

Posting profanity and offensive images is strictly prohibited and will be moderated by our on-site staff.

HR Giger's work is the very aesthetic of the series and his work is definitely controversial to many. Where do we draw the line for posting images here? The dialogue started here:

Thanks to Ati for inspiring the idea to bring this up for discussion.

Probably we should have a restricted, password enabled section :-) And not everybody thinks porn cannot be art. Even Stanley Kubrick wanted to make a porn movie.

Giger is art. Period. Art is freely consumable and should not be censored. It's up to parents to control access if they choose to do so.

I guess I will display this peice by Giger like I did last year and ask- is it art or is it porn?:

Oh, dk, this is awesome, I thank you.

And everybody, while watching porn and art porn, please do not forget that you can own Covenant on digital HD from August 1 and you can buy the Blu-Ray from August 15. :)

Enjoy porn, enjoy the Covenant! :)

Ati It is becoming difficult to tell if you are just enthusiastic or starting to spam with that message- again- a fine line since it supports the franchise.........;)

Ati Your ads are just like the commercials for Ubik in the PKD novel of the same name. They are hilarious really :-)

Ha, I think art porn can be beautiful.

in the context of the A L I E N franchise it is a definitely a grey area given that the franchises main antagonist was inspired by a pseudo-sexual artwork with a purposefully phallic-shaped head that runs around penetrating people with an equally phallic-shaped second mouth lol.

Then there is the facehuggers.......!!!

Given the reoccurring violent and sexual themes of the franchise it is damn hard to find where to draw the line.

Interesting topic to debate

As far as I can tell, we are in untested waters. I suppose Alien style art would have to have context as well. As stated in the OP, I see no provisions regarding this.

I guess the difference is the absence of any actual intercourse and/or sexual penetration ever depicted in the franchise releases, just inferred, metaphorically or suggested.

Starlogger It raises some interesting questions. If this was a Star Wars or Jurassic Park forum, this post would likely not exist- but it is am Alien forum.

Back in the day when people used to get most of their pornographic images from the sex shop, items such as magazines would be put in a plain paper bag. Top shelf soft core porn that was available in local newsagents would have images censored by price tags. I refer here mainly to the UK public decency laws. An image which can be deemed to be of a pornographic nature has to be subject to some form of censorship. The key to this is about accessibility to the material in question. You Tube has a user account censorship filter. Only when I am logged into my You Tube account, am I permitted to view censored material. I think that is the way to go imo. That way there is no grey area.

In the case of Giger’s artwork this is a tested area.

I will leave a link which refers to the use of Giger’s artwork by the Dead Kennedy’s, which resulted in the Frankenchrist and obscenity trial (1985-1986)

Batchpool Thanks for weighing in! I am a HUGE Dead Kennedys fan- dk- get it? Penis Landscape was a poster included with the LP and even the later CD. It is one of the biggest reasons for the Tipper Sticker and almost destroyed the band.

I remeber the days of "harmful" matter being obscured with "descrete" packaging or being stocked in that small room with a curtain and sign saying Adults Only- it seemed to smell a bit off around there too as I recall.

The problem now- and maybe the problem is imagined- is that those restrictions really don't exist anymore. Parents can do what they will, but there is a way if there is a will.

I seek input on what is regarded as art or porn ON THIS FORUM specifically.

I think I know the answer, but the problem is that there is no ESTABLISHED WRITTEN STANDARD to go by.

In the case of Giger’s artwork this is a tested area.

Do you mean un tested? If not please cite where it is tested

"I refer here mainly to the UK public decency laws"

Ha ha the fun of reading a Readers Wives when you was younger and finding the Wives Section had someone who you knew....   but not the way to remember a Friends Mother lol

I think with Giger its very Surreal, so its a Grey Area but most Alien Franchise Fans love the Giger Aesthetic and his Art-work... while another Sections of Fans just love Ripley and Powerloaders lol

I just hope someone doesn't do something to really push the boundaries such as getting "excited" and making a member resemble a xeno head or making a vaginal area look like the entrance to the Derilect. I know it sounds sick- but if I can imagine it, someone has probably done it.

Well, time for dinner!

Out of curiosity I showed the image in question to some work colleges, without any reference to the context of where it came from.

Most felt it was "non-offensive soft-porn" simply because it depicted "sexual intercourse" and had "exposed anatomy".

They were more concerned as to why I was looking at said image lol.

The Giger fellatio pic? Cool that you actually conducted a field test of sorts!

Persoally, I am reminded of Judas Priest when I see that pic. That's just how it is.
