Fox Is Not Reassessing Ridley Scott’s Planned Alien Movies

Let’s try to find the balance!

Since Daszkowski hasn't changed the title of his topic (http://www.alien-covenant.com/topic/45966), I’ve decided to inform our readers about the facts.

Without knowing the Japanese numbers and the relevant blu-ray income, the Fox decision in question seems to be an utter nonsense.

The comments are taken from the topic mentioned:

By Kethol:

’I just read that article. It says "sources say Fox will have to reassess two intended sequels".So Fox has said nothing of the sort. THR did.’

’It does not say Fox "is reassessing". Two of the articles just reference THR. THR just says "Fox will have to reassess", but there has been no statement from Fox about anything. It just sounds like typical unsourced Hollywood media opinion to me.’

By Membrane:

’Correct. There have been no official statements from Fox Studios at this time regarding a "reassessment" of the 'Alien' franchise.’

By me:

Kethol, I'm with you, the line

"sources say Fox will have to reassess two intended sequels"

equals to

’my friends say Fox should reassess two planned movies'...

Plus, why would they say something similar before the Japanese opening and the blu-ray release? I'm sure they will announce something official about the future movies after this September.’

By Kethol:

’All the aggregate movie scoring websites show the majority of audience and reviewers liked Covenant.

IMDB = 6.7 out of 10

Tomatometer - 71% score

Metascore = 65 score

Fandango = 4.5 out of 5’

By Ingeniero:

’I agreed with the analysis Ati.

In addition to the Alien: Covenant Blue-ray, the release of the VR experience is coming soon. I love to theorize...so I say putting the Occulus on sale for 60 days might have something to do with the release of Alien: Covenant VR.

https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/10/oculus-rift-and-touch-controllers-on-sale-for-399-through-summer/

Alien: Covenant was on time, in budget, and profitable and the Blue-ray is coming out roughly 100 days after the movie's release in May 2017. The virtual reality experience is most likely going to be mind-blowing...so a great lasting commercial for Blue-ray sales of Alien: Covenant.

http://www.gamesradar.com/alien-covenant-is-getting-a-vr-experience-to-guarantee-youll-never-sleep-again/

Nothing is dead except Carter Burke. The Alien: Covenant sequel novel comes out the following month in September 2017. I still say that Ridley Scott filmed more than he's telling in 2016 and we could get another prequel film (Alien: Awakening) more quickly than the critics forecast.’

By Lawrence of Arabia:

'Fox hasn't made an official statement and Covenant did relatively well all things considered. I want to see Awakening and whatever Ridley has planned. David is a fantastic antagonist and I'm not getting the hate for this film. Every film thus far has had fallible characters make unlucky decisions, that's just humanity and part of what makes the film great. If the humans were smart they wouldn't be killed by Xenos. The Xenomorphs prey on our weaknesses and it's cool to watch them tear people to shreds. I digress, Rebooting or retconing Scott's films at this point is unwise and rude, the man created this franchise. Yes, Dan O' Bannon and Ron Shussett wrote the original screenplay but if they did things their way we would have a B-Movie by the name of StarBeast with a totally different monster. Scott got Fox to raise the budget, he got Giger on board, he dealt with the companies hounding, built the sets, and still pulled off a classic. Some are right, Alien isn't Blade Runner but to say the AIs don't play in integral role in the franchise is wrong. Scotts just looking for something fresh for the franchise and the route he's chosen is an interesting one. Most I know are disappointed with the lack of answers or Engineers from Prometheus which Scott said will play a vital role in the next film. Let's wait and see and enjoy the ride.'

There is nothing in it at all.

Even if FOX WERE reassessing surely that is what you would do before going forward with anything ? I would expect FOX to reassess everything after its release.

So even if it was said (which it was NOT) then they would probably only be going through the steps as they would after any release.

The amount of data available these days, reassessing a situation is just normal good business. It does not mean it is due to negative feelings/data around it.

That is my take on it

Take This.... This is the blood of our lord

Thank you, you are a god send. People are just spinning this rumor out of control and to their notions because some are upset with what Ridley's doing. I really hope Fox is behind Ridley 100%.

Plus, in an earlier thread, some board members found that this year is just a bad year for movies.  So, that is something to consider too.

I Moon Girl Fair point considering time of year and other competition.

So Fox IS NOT reassessing Ridley Scott movies? They just cancelled them altogether?

Now seriously, Ati you sound like Trump trying to fence off the "fake news media" haha. And I am sure if you called Ridley Scott right now and asked him about the follow up to Covenant he would probably reply to you: "What follow up? Are you talking about the Alien franchise? But that franchise is cooked, Sir; however I did my best to bring it to a wonderful conclusion that answers all you ever need to know about Alien"

dk

MemberTrilobiteJul-23-2017 9:26 PM

RS changes his mind all the time. Between his mind changing and FOX's meddling, it is difficult to care. Members on the forum have better ideas imo.

lets start a partition to have Blackwinter-witch pushed as a writer for the franchise. Her work is head and shoulders above every other official or non-official script

joylift --- Reading your comment carefully, I think I must try to understand your frustration concerning the fact that your scripts in the Alien Universe are not wanted by Fox. At the same time, I strongly believe that your offensive behaviour should not be tolerated on the site. I think you should try to avoid the extreme you have provided in your comment above. Moreover, I suggest that you should stop attacking and ridiculing Ridley Scott in your comments and show more respect towards him and his works.

@dk you are disappointing me! Where is the bright eyed, positive, glowing and beaming pure "Alien" fan that we knew back when you signed up for this forum? You've become a cynic in a very short time!

Bring back the old dk! ;)

Thank you for featuring me in your post Ati, it's an honor :-)

I agree with Starlogger, I want the old dk back.

Lawrence of Arabia Starlogger I guess if you want the old dk back you need to send him to Rekall (from Total Recall) so they erase any memory of having watched Covenant.

Ati It is not the first time that you try to bully me suggesting I should be banned from this forum. As for attacking and ridiculing Ridley Scott, I never did such thing. I actually take offence when someone try to suggest he is to old or that he should retire, etc. IMO not even 10 Nolan and Villeneuve movies can possibly match the brilliance of just two Ridley Scott movies: Alien and Blade Runner. However, all this doesn't mean he won't make a bad movie. You cannot make everybody think like you, man.

Super clever lol Everyone is entitled to their opinion and if dk doesn't like Covenant, that is fine. Getting all butthurt about it isn't. I still think it's a fantastic movie. That doesn't mean how I felt about the film is invalidated either. You're just looking to troll and drag everyone down to your level. Please take your childish behavior elsewhere.

Lawrence of Arabia Exactly: everybody is entitled to their own opinion. But you are part of a group that doesn't tolerate different opinions. This group is even attacking users who actually liked the movie, like Daszkowski, just for posting information that is in the news. You guys are right out from a George Orwell book.

Lawrence of Arabia

MemberChestbursterJul-24-2017 5:38 PM

Way to assume lol I tolerate different opinions but when you guys are just plain hating or misinterpreting the film, I'll speak up. I would say you are part of the group that posts pictures of the bridge that Ridley's brother committed suicide on as your way of saying you dislike the film. I've never attacked anyone for having a differing opinion. I'm disappointed dk didn't like the film as I'm tired of the incessant and undeserved hate this film is getting. I understand some were expecting a different Prometheus sequel but to say Covenant is bad is ridiculous. You don't sound like you like others opinions either, as you are trying to bring Ati and I down for simply wanting more from Ridley. You're insinuating that I am less than you are. Please, take your childish behavior elsewhere.

Joylitt --- It is not the first time that you try to bully me suggesting that I suggest that you should be banned from this forum. As for attacking Daszkowski, I never did such a thing. Daszkowski was kindly asked to change his topic title which was misleading and false. I actually take offence when someone tries to share fake pieces of news attempting to manipulate others. Plus, I do not share download links of poor quality copies before official blu-ray release dates either. You cannot make everybody think like you, man.

differences of opinion/interpretation are a good thing. Forums like this would be very boring if we all agreed with everything.

But please brothers don't attack each other, attack the opinion.

Glad you guys are sticking up for each other as these times are trying for many of us. While it is noted to hold back on the RS criticism, calling a spade a spade is not a bad thing. Surely Fox is reassessing how to do better at the box office and wrap this prequel saga up intelligently and economically. I foresee the harsh opinions dying down soon as whats done is done, only to move forward as one as a dedicated but diverse fanbase. Ridley has achieved a lot and nobody is shortchanging him except for logical critiques that can only make him a better filmmaker/storyteller here or on some other films. Wish we all thought Covvy was engaging and original as Prometheus but we are fighting for a better movie next time. Maybe somebody important reads this stuff and gets a clue on what the fans don't like and try to fix it, if there is a next one.

Incredibly refreshing to see this kind of thing OP, and a shout out to the quote from @Lawrence of Arabia - my thoughts exactly and I couldn't have put them better myself.

It's easy for the rumor mill to run rampant and sweep up people's perspectives along the way.

Well i missed this Topic... so its nice for the Bump..

It appears FOX and RS had discussed near Back-to-Back Sequels, the draft was almost done if not just needing some final tinkering and putting to a Shooting Script,  Ridley Scott had announced plans to shoot the Movie about July 2018, with a release in about April 2019.

Then we had the Box Office Results and Criticism and surely FOX would want to take a Time-Out and Reflect on what happened with the Box Office and look at the  Criticism , because FOX simply at this point (July 2017) would not be willing to Bank-Roll Blindly a Sequel and ignore the Criticism and Box Office Numbers, because they would not want to end up with another Box Office Flop so to speak, which would leave them Dead in the Water, because Logically any sequel would Set-up the FINAL movie that connects to ALIEN which would leave them the Choice to abandon Ship, leaving those Answers to Alien a Mystery of sorts, and leaving us on a bit of a Unanswered Cliff Hanger setting up a 3rd Alien Prequel that would never happen...   Or do they Proceed with the 3rd Movie at the risk of it also not being a Success.

So FOX was put in a difficult situation..

I think this Topic is Irrelevant as of now with the Disney Take Over...  I think Disney would be in NO RUSH to make a ALIEN movie,  i think also the Actions of Blomkamp by releasing more Concepts for his Alien 3 Re-boot and then saying he is abandoning the Project are simply a clever piece of Marketing by him to engage Fanboys to make Videos and Topics on Social Media wishing that Blomkamps Project can get the go ahead.

If Disney see on Social Media etc that Blomkamps ideas are gaining a lot of steam as far as Fans disappointed that the Project may never happen, Disney could see the potential to make a Blomkamp style Alien Movie.

Ridley Scott's chances of doing his Project are diminished but it may not be too late, while Blomkamps seemingly Dead in the Water Project could have a slight chance of Resurrection, Ridley Scott's Prequels are by no means Abandoned, he has stated that with the ground work/set up down for a sequel to AC and then another to bridge the gap to Alien it would be Crazy to abandon this now.  I think RS best chance of getting his Project Green Lit by Disney could be to work on a few Disney Projects and let Disney see first hands what RS as a Director has to offer, then this could get RS very much in Disney's Good Books  which could allow RS to Plug his Alien Prequels.

red0guy

That is the dark fantasy when you turn off the lights...

dk

MemberTrilobiteJan-10-2018 8:29 PM

Legend is LEGEND imo. I think the difference between light and dark fantasy is that dark fantasy has a character or situation where something can be lost on a heavy level like a soul, life or the world. Light fantasy is that crap where someone might lose a girl friend and think it is the end of the world.

There- have fun with those standards!

UPDATE-

The origional Star Wars was light fantasy. There was a clear cut good guy/bad guy.

Dark fantasy has more ambiguity like Legend. There is good and evil but evil is given a voice to state its case and is not completely unreasonable.

Satan from the South Park Movie rightfully stated- "Without evil there can be no good, so it must be good to be evil sometimes".
