I really do not understand movie critics

The Mummy 1999 was 57% on Rotten Tomatoes and I saw the new Tom Cruise version last night which is in the low 20%.  I tell you this; both movies are better than Alien Covenant.  Even though I do not find the new Mummy better in story than the 1999 version; it had memorable action scenes and was enjoyable to watch.  I do not know how many times I have seen critics get the movie wrong.

Look... I'm really not into a discussion or something like that, so don't get me wrong... I also know everybody has its opinions and everything, and that's what make a forum like this so great. BUT HONESTLY... at the moment you tell me "The Mummy 1999" was better than Alien Covenant, and even make a topic about it, I can ONLY think that it's some kind of MAJOR TROLL. From your thousands of topics talking about how much you HATE this movie, I can understand it's not being easy for you pal, but honestly...

I don't even get why do you hate it so much - the reason why Covenant sucks at times is exactly when it looks like your beloved Aliens - a shoot'em up with alien insects...

Now I realize why many members of this forum are just staying away from here, for some time... it's getting annoying. Opinion is one thing, trolling is another one.

Farlander agreed. We're all Alien fans here, lets not compare it with The Mummy. That's just spoiling for a fight lol.

movie critics are an absolute waste of time to listen to.
I rely on seeing a movie, or failing that experiences of close and trusted friends.

movie critics are a joke-occupation, really, I just can NOT take any of them as anything but clowns.

All about taste.

I hate Country music.....BUT that's my problem...I'm the loser. I miss out on millions of songs/CD's/concerts because I have some mental issue that I can't defeat. It's not the country music artists problem...it's mine.

Can't imagine if I had to review country music albums for a living! Or romance movies...Or just about any movie other than SCI-FI! lol!

One of the biggest lines of drivel spewed by just about every critic is how they claim to be 'fair' and 'unbiased'...and consistently prove over time how they're nothing but poorly skilled Liars at best and so full of themselves they make James Cameron look humble.

I mean they do pretty much watch movies for a living, they obviously have some level of expertise. Not saying they're always right or wrong but not like people have a problem with them when they aren't disagreeing with that person's opinion on a movie.

@Farlander Well said. Thanks.

While I agree with many that it's an issue of tastes. I suffered some major disappointment with Covenant because I had specific expectations. I have certain criticisms for how this entire project is being managed.

That said, I still liked the movie. It's not my favorite movie but it did some things that I really enjoy seeing in film.

I do think we could have some fun with this thread. We can take the premise of the OP and remove the negative connotation by each of us citing a movie we enjoyed more than Alien Covenant. We can do this without any bashing at all.

For example, I liked Alien more than Alien Covenant. I also liked The Thing more than Alien and I liked 2001 more than any of these.

Everyone who has accused me of trolling is being ridiculous.  The admin stated that people have the right to give a negative opinion as many times that they want to.  I do not insult or criticize others for thinking Covenant is a great piece or even decent amount of work.

Question my fandom is also silly but I tell you this.  I am a fan but not fanatical about this series.  I owned (almost the laserdisk), the pan and scan on VHS, Quadrilogy series on both VHS and DVD and blu-ray.

I was born in 1966 and saw the first four Alien movies in the movie theater when it was first released and even saw them more than once.  I was a teenager when Alien came out; in which I saw it with an Uncle; then convinced my scared mother to see it with me the second time.  I had the program for the movie and the novel.

I saw Aliens when I was in college and I was already serving my country that time in the US Army Reserves.  I flunked out of college in 1997 and switched from the US Army to the US Marines where I spent the next four years of my life on active duty serving in Okinawa Japan and Quantico, Virginia.

I was out of the service from 91-97, served as a federal law enforcement agent and then came back on active duty due to the 9/11 attacks.  I fought for my country in Iraq in 2005/2006 as a Military Policeman.

In 1994, I did work on a low-budget film called Destination Unknown directed by Nestor Miranda.  I worked pro-bono but got my name as a production assistant shown in the end-credits.

In college, I was a media arts major for a bit and I attempted at writing screenplays.  I am a true movie buff.

I know that the Mummy and Alien Covenant are two different genres but when I compare them on story, continuity, engagement and overall action and quality of the film; The 99/2000s Mummy beats Covenant hands down.  That is my opinion (I think in 2017 we are still allowed to have them lol).

I saw none of the AvP movies and Prometheus because I was in Afghanistan in 2012 for nine months.  I first saw huge divide and polarization when the movie came out.  When I finally saw it, I was very disappointed and had that scratch the head with the WTF did I see attitude.

I am not a sick fan like Trekkies who flock to conventions but this was one of my favorite series that has now tanks.  Star Wars has been revived after the prequels and just like Transformers are a sure thing for a billion-dollar gross worldwide.

Covenant had the opportunity of beating Prometheus in gross but the story, acting, poor editing and visual cinematography killed it.

I work in CyberSecurity now for the US Government and trust me that I have seen what trolls have done on social media sites.  Our last presidential election has proven that.

So you either have the option in engaging in debate on the movie, ignore my posts and do not enter my thread posts if you not going to like what you see.

@Queen, I loved The Thing and even its prequel with the same title but I give Alien over the Thing anyday of the week.  John Carpenter was one of my favorite directors when I started watching his Halloween series.

@Blackwitch, I miss my Siskel and Ebert critics.  They were a fun duo to watch.

BTW, I received some PMs from another person who was highly disappointed by Covenant.  He said he was leaving the forum because he was tired of getting bashed for hating on the movie.  I tell you this, I won't get intimidated by anyone here; especially by strangers on the internet.  Also, I like this website because they have online discussions about other movies as well (e.g. Predator).

ColonialS. They (critics) are pretentious just like Alien Covenant's ear scraping dialogue. Just remember our names when you see a thread and you will know that squatting for a poo break on top of Covvy is likely. Critics are divas mostly and now they are in strategic warfare shouldering rocket fired CLICK BAIT as goo tech. I prefer what other regular humanoids on social media have to say granted they are somewhat grounded. Hacksaw Ridge and WonderWoman are absolute JEDI story telling with those directors being hoisted on high for NOT pulling a Ridley.

@Capt- I think some movie critics are swayed, bought or whatever for their review.  I just get baffled by some of these metrics; that is all.

Also, I met Kramer Morgenthau on the movie set and he is a very serious guy.  He is on my FB page and I have complimented him on his movie success after the low-budget unknown flick lol.

Alright fellas, back on the topic or don't bother. Feel free to attack the opinion, but not the user. This is the final warning.

Okay, yeah, Siskel and Ebert, the Odd Couple Critics, they were fun. NO one really cared what movie they reviewed they were a show by themselves. :)

Thank you @Gman and I will do my part to keep things in line.  @Ati, if you think PTSD and Alcoholism is a funny topic; then so be it.  But I lost a Commander to suicide and veterans are dying on a daily basis.

I suggest you just keep continuing keeping us informed on the latest box office totals than the lame personal attacks.

Just saying, I'm on your side as I'm married to a Veteran, and well aware what's going on with Veterans as well, as I have other friends who are and I do worry about them.

That said, I think the best way for movie Critiquing should be a show or something where 3 Critics are chosen, and all watch the movie Seperately, a triple-blind idea, and have NO contact with each other except after stating their reviews where you'd then have a roundtable discussion about whichever film is involved.
