Only one synthetic on a colony mission...

One thing that surprised me about Covenant, is that despite Weyland Industries apparently having millions of synthetics out there, they only send one on an important mission such as this.

It doesn't really make any sense to me, you'd think there would be a whole bunch of them, for helping to build the new colony and doing dangerous work outside of the ship if it's damaged.

Also, given the importance of the "cargo", you'd think they would've sent Walter down to the planet to investigate and only Walter.

Yeah it is kind of crazy to only have one synthetic on board, what happens if he should malfunction or be destroyed? What about when they get to Origae-6, surely they will need all the help they can get? I suppose from a storytelling perspective it diminishes the impact of the relationship between David and Walter. That ending certainly wouldn't have been so shocking if there were two or three other Walters around.

As for your second point, the novelization at least has it that Walter goes out and explores first, determines that the environment is safe, then the rest of the crew head out. Again, for the sake of expediency such a scene would only serve to slow the film down, despite being more scientifically sound.

Perhaps there are other Walter models in storage?

Once the ship reached Origae 6, they would then be brought online.

Of course, there is always the possibility that this particular Walter had some secret programming, which could be activated when the time was right.

I thought Ash was aboard(sleep chamber #801)?

He is a competent back up.

Hope David doesn't mess with his programming!

MonsterZero where did you hear that, or what led to your thinking that?

I would not think they would have Walters in storage but we cant rule this out... the Problem would arise with how do they respond to David... can David fool them into thinking he is a Walter, surely they would notice something Fishy going on during the movie and want to talk to Daniels etc.

But indeed it seems odd to take just One Synthetic.. but then it had to be done for story telling as a David vs Multiple Walters would not have gave David much chance of getting his Agenda done.

HOWEVER...

I cant see Fassbender playing the Role of a One Handed Synthetic in the Next Movie.  And so its Logical the Covenant had Spare Parts for Walter so they can repair him.

I feel this is exactly what we will see in the next movie, maybe David even Builds a Complete new Walter and uses this Walter to gain the Bio-Mechanical Xenomorph if these Walters are Synthetic Constructs.

Or David uploads his Soul/Mind into this Built Walter Model and he gets Chest Busted on the Derelict.

I think this is a Logical Plot Device they may take, its what i would consider if i was writing the sequel.

@Resurgence, Nah...Just a fan fiction take on things.

Would have been cool if they ended A:C with David looking at Ash in a hanging sleep chamber!

They have 2000 or so interesting characters they can use for the sequel.

I see no reason WY hasn't 'hid' another synth on the Covenant,  keeping tabs on the new colony and reporting back to corp.

I think while on the journey to Origae-6, The Covenant has many fully-automated systems and only one synthetic would be needed at this time.

If Walter malfunctioned or broke down, MUTHUR would detect this and unpack another synthetic and bring it online to replace Walter.

I believe The Covenant would have hundreds of synthetics on board for the huge lists of tasks which would need completing once The Covenant arrived at Origae-6. They're all still in the storeroom!

I don’t believe that there is only one synthetic aboard. From what has been revealed about Walter through the virals, etc, is that there are various types of Walter with designated roles. So in the case of the Walter we have already met, he would have been designated the role of looking after the initial waking crew members ready to explore a new planet.

When you look at the various types of Walter models available, they can all take on key roles that you would find in any society, so it would make sense to have all these variable types of Walter on board so that when you finally start creating a new colony there is this added AI input from synthetics.

If this idea seems plausible, then what comes next could be the direction of the next movie.

What is the point in being in control, if have nothing to control? What I mean by this, is that David now has control of the colony ship. He has potential control over a human and AI colony. If David is truly interested in developing his Dr Dolittle repertoire and taking to Xeno’s, he would not want to completely destroy all of his human lab rats.

I think it would make more sense that David arrives at Origae 6 and allows a colony to set up and establish itself. The catch here is that he could be in control of all the Walter models who have key positions within the new society. He could make himself king and have the human colonists become slaves.

Ridley has hinted at a war. This could be a war between absolutely anything, but what if you have a human colony controlled by synthetics with David as king and then something intervenes. That something could be human or maybe Engineer, possibly both. Maybe then you would end up with a battle between all three, human, engineer and AI with some xeno’s thrown in.

Indeed... we cant rule out other Synthetics for sure, the Viral site does hint they have many uses...

A Puzzle for me however is why did they not take a number down to the surface?  In the Lope Viral video he was saying he was concerned that 6 Security Personnel could be a bit too little for a uncharted mission.

Surely the company would have placed a few Military Walters with the Crew, and maybe a Medical One too.

But this does not mean we cant rule out the Ship having any on board... this could be brought in for the Plot, but i would not image loads.. or maybe they could do.. and have some of these as the Covenants Protection against the Hostile Xenomorph threat.

I am not so sure they would go to Origae-6 we need to think of Davids Plans... and Agenda... and for that i think he would not need to have the Colonist set down on Origae-6 and then Spring the Xenomorph infestation on them

He would likely be able to experiment on the Covenant Ship, or better still head to LV-223 or even back to Paradise.

Also Daniels knows about David and that means he would have to take her out and explain it to Tennessee, he may then get a bit suspicious or maybe not?

The other Colonists have no idea about what happened on Paradise, if David kills Daniels and Tennessee and can get MUTHUR to be on his side or edit the Logs...

He could explain what ever he wants to the other Colonist and they may be a bit suspicious as they would know the other Main Crew was kept in a seperate Area as they was the Main Crew to pilot the initial Mission when they arrived at Origae-6 this is why the Covenant crew in the movie (those from the Last Supper Viral and who was awake from Cryo-sleep in AC) they all had their Cryo-Pods in a different Area.

It would look suspicious that all of them are dead, but then before they landed on Paradise the ship lost 47 Colonist so who knows.. But David would certainly have to get rid of Daniels and Tennessee

MonsterZero that could possibly be the case except for it would be the human ash is based off of and it would definitely be less far fetched than some of my theories
