What If...David was behind what happened to the Nostromo?

Whether you like the movie or not Alien: Covenant has landed and for better or worse has added to a mythology that is already quite muddled. Many have been theorizing how the movie could potentially link to the first movie with wild speculations such as having either David or Walter become the Space Jockey or the colonists becoming the eggs in the cave beneath the derelict Juggernaut on LV-426.

Cursed with an over-active imagination, I have found myself (as I do with every new installment) absorbing what this latest movie has added to the mythology and continuity and how the franchise could potentially move forward. While 2012's Prometheus polarized and divided many fans, and introduced a few new questions to the franchise there was one question that was raised that many fans seemed to overlook...

If both LV-223 and LV-426 were used by the Engineers, what is on Calpamos' third moon?

While I have asked myself this question for a while now and imagined a possibility that I feel would please many fans of the franchise, I recently pondered how it could be tied into the events of Alien. In the original movie, it is revealed that Ash (secretly a synthetic) has been following a "Special Order", related to him by MUTHUR to "ensure the return of the organism". The inference is that Weyland-Yutani, being aware of the derelict Juggernaut on LV-426, re-routed the Nostromo to the system with the intention of using the crew to gather a specimen of the Xenomorph. This element adds a "corporate conspiracy" element to the movie that at the time of the movie's release was a very tired and overused narrative trope (Rollerball, Logans Run, Soylent Green, Demon Seed). This element of the story was also added to the script by David Giler (Brandywine Productions) as part of a measure to edit the original script enough so that he could claim ownership, and thus the production rights from the scripts original author; Dan O'Bannon.

While many of us will agree that the corporate conspiracy element does add to the narrative of Alien, within the franchise it has caused some issues that fans have struggled to explain ever since. Chief of which is the 1986 sequel Aliens, in which we learn that 37 years after the events of the first movie the Hadley's Hope Colony was established on LV-426. If Weyland-Yutani were behind SO-937, why wait 37 years to return to LV-426. If Weyland-Yutani knew where the derelict Juggernaut lay, why after 20 years on such a small planetoid (1200 kilometers) did it require co-ordinates from Ripley for the vessel to be found? If the Nostromo was sent there "under the radar", why was Weyland-Yutani allowed to send colonists to the moon?

But, what if... we could retcon the corporate conspiracy out of the franchise and return it somewhat closer to O'Bannon's original script...

What If...

Following the events of Alien: Covenant David reroutes the Covenant to this mysterious third moon to further learn the terrible truths of the Engineers and to continue his macabre experiments. After being there for nearly 20 years the Covenants "radar" picks up the Nostromo en-route to Thedus. Accessing the crew manifest David recognizes Ash as a synthetic and prepares an elaborate trap - having been in the Zeta II Reticuli system for so long David already knows of the derelict Juggernaut on LV-426 and activates its beacon (or repeats Shaws transmission, now heavily corroded) and uses the Covenants MUTHUR to send SO-937 to the Nostromo's MUTHUR, knowing that Ash would follow the order without question.

This would explain Weyland-Yutani's ignorance and dismissal of Ripley's testimony in Aliens, with the Patna in Alien 3 possibly realizing the truth of the Xenomorphs existence from Ripleys bio-scan of the Queen Embryo she was carrying at that point.

As to what is on the third moon; I'm keeping that quiet for know!

I like it Gavin!!

Plus, David knows that he has immortality, up to a point. He is in no hurry and has plenty of time to perfect his plan.

I have been favouring a David-Ash-MUTHUR link for a while now and I feel Covenant has added more weight to this theory.

More importantly, as you say, your idea doesn't conflict with or ruin the timeline of the other films in the franchise, which would hopefully appease some fans.

Im liking this idea too. As much as I like Ripley and all that I do feel that David is the most important character to the Alien series now.

Im near sure I read somewhere that Ridley Scott said that Alien would be considered a side story to what he had plans for. That where we are going with Prometheus and what follows is the main idea and concept.

Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well.

Just no. Corporations are always up to some shit and I don't want the alien series to be focused on AI so sorry but forget it.

hi all new here!

just wanted to say personally i wouldnt want david to be behind the crashed juggernaut.

when i first watched alien as a young teenager it scared the crap out of me, so for years i only watched aliens as it still had the scary xenos but they were basicslly cannon fodder.

as an adult i realised it doesnt compare to alien at all, the perfect organism. fear personified, as if growing inside somebody it learnt ti become your worst fears.

obviously we now have this whole new mythology with the enginerrs and covenant basically showing david as some sort of creator of the iconic xeno. but to me that takes away everything that was 'alien' about it.

a crashed alien vessel completely alien to anything anyone would imagine about aliens, with the stargazer, not sur of dimensions but much larger than the engineers in prometheus, carrying some sort of eggs host to facehuggers that latch onto its victim to lay a parasite that grows inside the host and takes some of its charecteristics to erupt and grow into something completely alien and almost unfathomable, without eyes, acid for blood which seems like something pure evil and nightmarish.

not knowing what it was and how 'alien' the whole thing was to me where all the fear comes from.

so as its suggested in alien the derelict seems to be ancient and fossilised, we also know from prometheus from the mural that they worshipped some form of xeno.

what if the original engineers found their god, from i dunno a black hole where the universe was created, anti matter or something that even they couldnt explain

it also ties into prometheus with stealing from th gods and being punished. suppose the stargaser was from a much more ancient race of engineers as we knows hes much larger thsn thr engineers in prometheus, who somehow discovered this anti god and ended up wiping themout as he tried to escape only to have one bust through his chest etc etc.

all the other engineers we see are maybe seeded from that original race thats why dsvid hates them aswell, and thry came to worship this perfect god/organism and began to start destroying us as seeing us as unworthy.

i dunno, i just want the xeno and everything about it to stay 'alien' for it to stay something more than just a creation, especially by david (as much as i love the character) i want it to be something even the original engineers didnt understand like a god or anti god. to stay something pure.

sorry re-read the original post. all of that would still tie in with where the xenomorph originally came from.

@ Lone & ETB, kudos old friends

@ Thoughts_Dreams - Personally I would actually kill off David in such an installment, but if Fox and Ridley get their way the Alien Saga could very well be going down the crazy AI route.

@ Xenophobic - Welcome to Scified. I never said anything about David being responsible for the derelict Juggernaut - others have suggested that. What I was inferring was that David could lure the Nostromo to LV-426 by activating the Juggernauts beacon (or relaying Shaw's message from Covenant) and sending SO-937 to the Nostromo.

What happened to the xenomorph that hatched out of the Space Jockey on LV-426? Given how large the fossilised SJ was, in comparison to the humans from the Nostromo crew, the xenomorph must have been massive.

I have another theory: David IS Ash.

In Covenant, Walter clearly stated they were no more androïds like David, replaced by less "creative" ones.

However, I found that Ash act/talks very creatively and more, says that the Xenomorph is the "perfect weapon", thus showing a deep admiration towards the creature, as David does.

My theory is that David found a way to get back to earth and either transfered his A.I to an "Ash body" or changed his face. The question are "why ?" and "how ?" he got back to earth.

David entered is own security code at the end of AC but sent the transmission as Walter, maybe he was given total control by Weyland.

sorry @gavin didnt read it correctly but that would tie things up nicely

I think Walter is the one behind the warning transmission that the Nostromo picks up. He's the one in the Space Jockey chair we see in Alien.

@RedLion Ash wasn't made by Weyland-Yutani though, he's made by a different company, Hyperdyne Systems.

I do indeed think the events of Alien Awakenings must/will either take us to Alien or very close...   We dont know where the movie is taking us...  Unless RS is going Massive Oversight again (Not so Engineers on Paradise, TWO Different Space Jockey sized in Alien) etc etc

Then it would appear these are a few key elements to come.

*The Xenomorph's Bio-Mechanical Evolution.. how does it become as such.

*The AI Connection David/MUTHUR and Ash/MUTHER are they in cahoots and surely information is passed on from what ever happens on the Covenant.

*Derelict Ship, if David creates the Eggs then a Engineer ship has to come into play.. Is this from LV-223 or from another place and who is the Pilot? Engineer, Human or Synthetic.

*2000 Colonists... surely this is not just coincidence and David surely wont have them all killed and have a Queen. I think the Egg Morph could be coming back.

*LV-223 and Paradise, what has become of these places and why the company only pursues the LV-426 Derelict and Ripley for the Xenomorph.

I think we need to look at maybe not having to many Coincidences...

LV-223 Engineers Outpost Xeno-Related Black Goo Strain that leads to the Xenomorph and also Ships that become the Derelict.

LV-426 Moon next door that has the Derelict, surely it came from LV-223... to have LV-426 also be another place connected to the Xenomorph and Engineers is a Coincidence apart from where the Derelict Crash-Landed.

LV-121 and LV-829 (seems logical Pattern) and if these Moons also hold Xenomorph related Origins or Aftermath never mind Engineer Outpost/Technology.

These would just be too much of a Coincidence.

Origae-6 being a Engineer World, again would be a Coincidence

I can only assume David goes to LV-223 because he needs a Ship and maybe Black Goo, unless RS Goes for Mass Egg Morphing or a Queen from those Face Hugger Embryos.

I can only assume the Covenant gets Destroyed, and LV-223 also gets Destroyed.

I cant rule out that AI will be shown as playing a Key-Role behind the Scenes, they are running the Show and Humans dont even realize it... we are Pawns to their Game. A Hidden Agenda ruled by AI could explain why the AI knows about LV-426 and are willing to Sacrifice Humans to obtain and Procreate the Xenomorph.

I think a Transcendence type event could come into play, where David Uploads himself to the Covenant AI and he then also Hacks other Systems and becomes some Transcending Virus.

I think its likely David will create a Walter from Parts and either use this in experiments to obtain the Bio-Mechanical Xenomorph... or David Transcends himself into this new Walter Body.

Logically this has to come into play, so as to fool the other crew and i think at least Daniels has to be got rid of...  sorry Guys but TWO Face Huggers.. And TWO Survivors who Witnessed the Horrors of Davids Experiments = First Two Hosts.

The SPACE JOCKEY..  is the Big Question, will this be a Human or Synthetic despite the Size Difference? Which will be passed off as a Oversight like the other Errors made regarding the Space Jockey/Engineers every movie that included them.

If they go for a Engineer/Elder then how/when does these being come across David and his Experiments and why would they want that Cargo.....  A Simple Explanation would be that they find out what happened and set off to Destroy LV-223 and then they discover David's Perfection and attempt to take it back to Study or to get rid of.

@ BigDave,

The image above of Calpamos, from Alien, shows only three moons, not four. Though I do like the name LV-121 for the third moon as it fits nicely alongside the new classification for our favorite antagonist - the XX-121 Xenomorph.

While it's good sometimes to let our imaginations run riot we have to remember the general audience, as such a narrative that is too convoluted. At the same time going for the bluntly obvious will have the same effect. As such having David return to LV-223, commandeer a Juggernaut, egg morph the 2000 colonists, take off and then "crash" on LV-426 having somehow become flesh, grown to twice his size and fallen foul to one of his cargo is quite frankly the worst idea I have ever heard. It tears apart the mystery of the Derelict and makes the Xenomorph little more than the new Frankensteins monster.

You also make mention of too many coincidences. Yet what I suggest is that Calpamos' three moons each play a key role with LV-426 being the warehouse where the weapons are stored and LV-223 being where the weapons are deployed from. This would suggest that LV-121 could be where the weapons are developed, further suggesting an abundance of exotic technology.

As for the "What If" scenario I suggested, it would make Weyland-Yutani's actions throughout the franchise more cohesive with the only issue arising being the source of SO-937, which if it was sent by David from LV-121 would help make Aliens and Alien 3 make more sense in regards to Weyland-Yutani's actions, and fit in with Davids actions as we saw them in Covenant.

Finally, considering your knack for deduction and observation I am surprised that you even mentioned the possibility of Origae-6 being the Engineer homeworld. Considering the truth is so obvious, I would have at least have hoped you BigDave would have also figured it out?
