Alien Covenant Is the Perfect 'Bridge' Movie

Yeah, there are a lot of people who think that the movie lacks some answers concerning the Engineers, but I think it was time to enjoy an Alien movie focusing on the origins of the xenomorph. And I'm happy with the AI story line as well.

I believe Alien Covenant is a perfect bridge movie between Prometheus and the next chapter. I'm sure every question regarding the Engineer background will be focused in the future Alien movies, so... Engineer fans, don't worry. If you get every answer in a movie, why would you wait for the next chapter???

For me, Covenant is a visual bomb, I hope an extended version will be released in the future.

I haven't seen it yet but know enough that I can agree. I think the next big questions are the Jockey, eggs and how it got hugged and crashed.

I hope the Blu-ray has a behind the scenes equivalent of The Furious Gods...that is so epic!

Like with Prometheus, there's sure to be a ton of deleted scenes for everyone to drool over and wish they had been included in the theatrical cut!!

@ati so agree. It was exactly what the PUBLIC wanted, whether everyone will agree it was a "great film" is always going to be argued. However, it supported the brand, and gave the fans and fanboys what they wanted---an "Alien" movie with real freaking Aliens.

So it accomplished that and now Ridley and Co. are free to explore even MORE options. There ain't nothing wrong with that!

@Lone I know! I want ALL of it, and, in the words of the late great Freddie Mercury---"I want it NOW!"

@Ati

I hope so as well. I would love a film that focus' on the Engineers next time round. Wouldn't mind a story where the Engineers are pissed at David.

Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well.

Starlogger Agree. I want it all and I want it now. I don't care if it is 3 1/2 hours long.

Engineer Tech Brett - I would love it. Some clever space battle scenes, awesome spaceships, etc. Ridley mentioned something about a possible war scenario if I remember well. It would be something different again, I hope it will be reality soon.

Starlogger - I want it in six months. I'm modest. :)

dk - Yes, 4 hours would be OK. :)

Not sure it is everyone's thing here, but I am a big fan of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly- it was over 3 hrs and very enjoyable and engaging. That was done waaayyy back when. We seem to have smaller attention spans in general these days.

I agree with you Ati. When all the pieces land for Ridley's trilogy A:C will be much more appreciated than it is now. People who don't like it either didn't look deep enough beyond the surface of what the film offered, or are too caught up in what they expected to see.

@Falconer

"People who don't like it either didn't look deep enough beyond the surface of what the film offered, or are too caught up in what they expected to see".

This is complete nonsense, and nor do I agree its the perfect bridge movie. Prometheus created a mythos around the Engineers race and a unique and powerful relationship between David and Elizabeth. In the crossing we see Davids relationship with Elizabeth harden and a clear statement that David found out the truth of the Engineers. Neither of these issues are addressed and Elizabeth is reduced to a confusing plot point which only by reading ADF 's novelisation and listening to Ridleys remarks gets close to any kind of coherency and the Engineers civilisation is mere texture in both book or film. We are on their home planet amongst the ruins of their civilisation and we wait for the next film to re quant ourselves with them and learn something meaningful ?

Most importantly there is huge story telling potential in both threads in terms of horror and philosophical explanation that has been lost huge potential has been squandered in favour of a routine re run in the first and third act.

Ridley has very kindly explained off screen how the Engineers functioned but Elizabeth went for answers on screen and some sort of sense of what they were should have been included in the film.

If this film is such a good bridge movie how come ADF is writing a Bridge book which fits between Prometheus and Covenant. That means there is an untold story missing !

Ridley has tried to reposition the story to suit a straight prequel which gives audiences their Xeno fix and can lead to a situational explanation of who what and how the Juggernaut ended on LV 426 and place the burden of depth on the journey of an A I.

I expected what the story telling momentum of Prometheus and The Crossing implied and we did not receive it. I think that is entirely reasonable set up with answers. I also think the success of the novelisation in communicating much more effectively the pivotal decisions and reasoning in the film suggest the film was low on communication values. What did Elizabeths signal mean, when was it created was it even a beacon signal at least in ADF's novel there is a hint she was trying to escape and with the bomb doors open in the wreck we could assume this was immediately after the attack but if thats the case it effects D & E"s relationship this is sloppy and lazy writing.

You are welcome to think what ever you like about the film but sweeping generalisations about those people who found it wanting in order to rationalise your view point deserves being countered. I doubt you have any better understanding of the film than many of us who found it wanting, which suggests to me you are easily pleased.

Prometheus screwed up the alien prequels. Many people jumped ship after Prometheus. Most of the negative feedback is from Prometheus fan boys.

Michelle - Thank you for your comment.

I agree with you here:

'Most importantly there is huge story telling potential in both threads in terms of horror and philosophical explanation...'

But I don't agree with you here:

'...a unique and powerful relationship between David and Elizabeth. In the crossing we see Davids relationship with Elizabeth harden and a clear statement that David found out the truth of the Engineers. Neither of these issues are addressed and Elizabeth is reduced to a confusing plot point...'

Unique? Yes. Powerful? Yes, but it is not about love. To be more precise, I don't think that the prologue in question 'The Crossing' should be viewed as a source of facts. I think you regard it as a reliable source of info concerning the events after Prometheus. I don't. I don't believe what David says in it. It is narrated by David, not David AND SHAW. And I didn't believe David right after the release of the prologue either. I started a topic about this issue then (26 April), it is here:

I Don't Believe David - The Phantom Crossing

Of course, this is only my opinion and my mirror.
