Much better than Prometheus, just wish the story was different.

I thought Covenant was a good watch.  There was nothing about Prometheus that I liked, other than the stunning visuals, but I enjoyed Covenant.

I know it's very selfish to wish the story was different, but I do.

From the moment I heard that there would be a movie set before Alien, and that it, or after some sequels/prequels, would lead to, or explain, the Derelict and the Space Jockey on LV426, I was hooked.

But what I wanted was the uncovering of what must have happened 'a long time ago' as Dallas commented.  And I wanted the Space Jockey to be a good guy - someone I could have sympathy for, someone who maybe bravely tried to ferry the lethal eggs to safety from his own race, but got 'hugged' - not someone from a race that was set to destroy humanity.

And having just watched Alien again, there's no way that the Engineer, even with his suit on, is remotely like the original Space Jockey, with his massive fossilized ribs and skeleton.

For David to be the Alien's engineer is not only disappointing, but contradicts the couple of promising nuggets in Prometheus - the life cycle images in the mural, the hologram of the Engineers running from 'something' and the Engineer skeletons with exploded chests (I think I remember that).

I can only hang on to some hope that in the 10 year journey, David tapped into all the Engineer's databases and managed to recreate a version of what happened maybe centuries earlier, and that it will be that much older story that took the 'real' Space Jockey on his journey that ended tragically for him - and for the Nostromo crew!!

I have my doubts!

But remember, I did enjoy Covenant.

Prometheus had interesting ideas (that weren't further expanded upon anyway because gore took over) but was mauled down by bad writing and acting, except David who fortunately saved the film from disaster. It's also visually beautiful in terms of special effects and beautifully shot scenes, but also had some hilarious design and attire choices such as the unitards with fish tank helmets or flip flops and scarfs XD let's not talk about the zombie that emerged but was quickly forgotten or the deacon that was left behind completely.

A:C has it's share of flaws as well but way fewer compared to Prometheus and with way better acting and no horribly dumb moments like in Prometheus.

As for the Space Jockey, like you perfectly point out there's no way the engineers in their space suits remotely resemble the huge entity in Alien, both in terms of size obviously but also because of the vast design differences between the two.

Do like I do, consign Prometheus and A:C to expanded universe! That way A:C is a fantastic standalone Alien film. Not much is explained anymore in terms of continuity so far (why was so much introduced and then thrashed in Prometheus...) so I just enjoy A:C for what it is, a good Alien experience with an interesting android villain.

I think I like Prometheus more but both in my opinion are good movies.

I much prefered the gore and pace of Covenant but I also wish there was a different explanation to how the xenomorph came to be, rather than David creating them. Not that it's a terrible plot... it's just that now, when I see a Xeno in Alien/Aliens they will always seem less sinister than they used to be... because they are now the result of experiments, not the mysterious uncontainable force that they were always made out to be. The whole failed experiment/creation thing (T-Virus, Rogue AI etc) is such a recycled cliché and takes away from the mysterious and primal fear that seeing the original Alien gave us.

What I loved about the Alien species (this is the way I always thought of them) is that they are a virus like primal organism intent on spreading as far across the universe and destroying everything they reach. As for the involvement of Engineers, I wanted to believe that they did not create this pathogen, they simply discovered the Aliens and combined their DNA with their already existing 'goo' to create a boiweapon. They did exactly what Weyland Corp was trying to do in the original movies (weaponise it) but managed to do it until it escaped, infected them and evolved once more through new hosts. This is why they are so destructive and scary, they have power and abilities that highly intelligent beings want to harness but in the end they will always win due to the greed of those trying to exploit them. The aliens die out when there are no hosts, and the eggs just lay dormant for thousands of years until someone else comes along thinking they can seize it and the cycle restarts. Man I could go on and on and on hahah

Prometheus was much better and will go down in history as being much better.  It's already proving to have been received better than Covenant.  Prometheus tried new stuff, Covenant didn't.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.  I watched Androids blow and finger each other's flutes.

Great points all, and very well put.  On my son's advice, I will give Prometheus another viewing.

Steven you are with the majority and me although Prometheus kept more of an awe inspiring feeling it was so muddled it was spoilt. AC is less muddled way more believable in parts but still suffers the same muddled logic :( . I really hope we don't end up with David being the creator i too loved the idea of the original space jockey being 100000 years our more old. But on the up AC was two steps forward one step back. The first half was pretty great... Its just the logic fell away after that...:(

Agreed - I also wish we hadn't seen the iconic Space Jockey's spacecraft till the very end of the series, when the nature of the mission that ended by crashing on LV426.

But too late for that, and now my only hope is that in future installments, Daniels & Tennessee will uncover: that the derelict on LV426 was from a centuries old mission; that the Space Jockey race was a victim of Alien infection; that the Engineers are advanced descendants of the Space Jockeys, and are dedicated to protecting the universe from the Alien species through their genetic experiments, which went catastrophically wrong on the Prometheus planet; that David did his experiments in the 10 year journey for his own reasons having studied the Engineers historical databases and created a version of the Alien. I hate the idea of the Engineers being destructive and that they planned to destroy humanity, and hope this can be 'corrected' in future films.

I know it's very selfish to wish the story was different, but I do.

I hear you. But with due respect, I wish Kirk Hammett would lose his wah pedal, but he never does. I hated Prometheus too. We cannot expect writers and artists to cater to us. Sorry if I pissed you off- accept my up vote for your candor.

True - and I wish Andy Murray would win every match too.

Cheers....

If i recall correctly the book mentions that these giants are or were a benvolent race and that they wished they could meet at another time.

something along those lines

Is there an agenda the mods are not telling us about? ;)

@phallic jaw - Yes, Prometheus made over 400 million worldwide; I hope this one can cross over 200 million worldwide.
